I've watched this movie a good few times now (10+) . Each time I see it I feel more and more sorry for Caesar . I mean he's just a small time crook and he gets completely shafted throughout the whole movie . OK , he's no angel and I know that Violet gives the big "who's using who" speech but does he really deserve to get killed . Surely the 3 of them could have split the money and lived happily ever after . It would have made an interesting sequel , especially in the sex scenes :)
Everybody seems to root for Cesaer. But let's not forget that the women weren't clear as water either. Somewhere down the line they will just do it again with some innocent unsuspecting civilian.
I felt a bit sorry for Cesar and anyone who had to interact with Johnnie Marzzone. Guys like him exist outside of the Cosa Nostra-spoiled,arrogant,legends in their own minds-and they are always hell to deal with. Cesar and Johnnie might have tried to kill each other even if Violet and Corky had not schemed and stolen the money. Total clash of egos waiting to happen.
Violet and Cesar were using each other-this was not a betrayal of true love.

I felt sorry for Caesar and hoped he'd win in the end. But I knew he wouldn't because it wouldn't have been the most politically correct thing to have him beating up and killing two lesbians.
Caesar lost it early on and the two ladies deserve the money. Violet took a lot of grief from Caesar for five years and he was a sadist. So when they planned the theft Caesar was suppose to run, they didn't plan to kill Caesar but after he threaten Violet, she was forced into live or die situation... I loved the interplay of the women, great love scene...
Exactly. Caesar wasn't just a crook, he was a sadist. Remember when Shelly was being tortured? He wanted to keep Violet around to hear it, just because he could. And when he could have escaped with the money or his life, he chose instead to pursue Violet, out of pride.
He kept Violet as a trophy, not a partner, and she lived in a guilded cage rather than a marriage. The only reason the girl's plan worked at all was because he assumed his wife was an idiot. Even at the end, he can't imagine she could live without him because of his giant ego.
He's a fantastic villain, but he is not a sympathetic character.
I didn't used to feel sorry for him, but every time I watch this I find myself liking him more and Corky and Violet less. Last time I watched it I was actually rooting for Caesar to knock the sh*t out of Corky.
What's with all the "He's a bad guy" judgment, anyway? As opposed to Corky and Violet? Corky's a convicted felon and Violet screws men for money. They're scarcely role models, those two.

Not on the same level though, not even close. Corky is a thief and Violet's effectively a prostitute, but Caesar is a murderously violent sadist with a crazy streak miles wide.
yeah I feel really sorry for a man who uses women and then physically brutalizes them when they understandably turn against him. He was a scumbag and scumbags like him pretty much deserve to be turned on. Especially by the women they beat the *beep* out of. And no I'm not some feminist, I'm a guy.
A small time crook? He's running money laundering for the mob. I don't think he's small time. He's a killer, don't you underestimate him. And that's not counting his charming personality. He's an arrogant condescending prick. And don't get me wrong, I love the character but feel sorry for him? nope.

I doubt the family of the people he murdered and tortured would feel sorry for him. Or the surviving victims he beat and robbed over the years and it is a myth the mafia don't hurt the innocent. Love Joey Pants in this but feel sorry for Caesar? Hell no.
Yes, I did feel sorry for Cesar and I did root for him. Certainly more than Violet or Corky.
First of all, he is not a sadist, Johnnie and Mickey are sadists. It was made pretty clear that Cesar was uncomfortable with the torture, and moreover, he never tortured Shelly. Being desensitized by a life of crime and taking pleasure in inflicting pain are not the same thing. Sure, you could say he was complicit in the torture, but so were Violet and Corky. Why didn't they just pick up the phone and call the cops?
Cesar is a murderer, since he killed Gino, Johnnie and the body guard, but so is Violet (for killing Cesar), and any case that could be made for her killing him in self defence would equally apply to Cesar.
Corky is a thief who picks up odd jobs for the mob. I'm not saying she's worse than Cesar, but she's no saint either. She also had no problem with framing a guy who was only ever nice to her and getting him killed.
Violet is a manipulating murderer who's fine with framing the guy who gave her everything and, as far as we know, never mistreated her, because she's bored with him. Lots of people get sick of their partner, but they just leave, they don't have them killed by the mob (which was essentially what she was doing). She could have just walked out and disappeared, but she saw a 2 million dollar payday and just had to snatch it whatever the cost.
I didn't feel that she was bored of him at all. I felt that she was scared and disgusted by this life, especially during the torture. She couldn't just leave, didn't Caesar threaten her when she said she wanted to? But yeah, she did get greedy.
