Does anybody find it disturbing?

This being a disney movie and all, I always found the whole plot concept quite disturbing. The whole point is that she wants to kill and skin the puppies... The "Skinner" guy is even shown with all of his crazy tools of the trade. I think it's sort of creepy how you don't really notice that as you are watching, especially if you are a child, but when you look back...it's sort of a wow moment. For me at least.

The Adventures of Perspective Man and Thigh Boy!!!

Disney takes delight in putting things into make you think back on them. Every villian always has a moment to make the kids jump behind the sofa.

How about when they're in Skinner's shop? How distubing...though I wear leather and such all the time, everyday.

reply

Yes, but the Hunchback of Notre Dame was originally a novel for adults.

reply

I understand why you might find it disturbing, but it's not ruining the movie for me.

reply

lol the funny thing was, I NEVER got disturbed by any of these Disney movies, even though the plots really are quite dark! I assumed the Skinner guy 'put the animals to sleep', then either SHAVED their fur off (LOL!!) or somehow managed to painlessly remove the fur without the skin. I thought the tools were for when he stitched the coats and all that.

looking at it now, this movie is just crazy! i mean, killing puppies for their fur? gross!!!! Disney is nuts lol. if this movie came out now, when im older, id think it was sadistic. as a kid, it was my fave.

I know! If you look in the parental advisory section on here, in the 'frightening scenes' bit it doesn't say anything about Skinner...I thought he was the scariest!

I completely agree, as a kid when i watched i didnt think much of the "Skinner" Guy, but when i watched it a few months ago, I realised "Wow, didnt notice how evil they wanted to be!"

The fright factor makes the film. Plus most kids can handle a lot more than 'grown ups' give them credit for. Doesn't anyone remember being a kid after they hit 30?

reply

Agree, the fright factor is what makes the movie work.
Children are afriad of scarylooking people and Skinner sure looks scary..

I find it both disturbing and dismaying that a film clearly "aimed" at both children and adults ends with a shot of a dog's upturned anus excreting into the face of the villain- or is it the face of the audience?- and by extension into everything the name of Disney once represented. What a difference a new owner makes!
