Conan O'Brien's departure in June 2021 from the nightly cable talk show format raises the question of the future of the nightly cable talk show format. In recent years, Comedy Central's Lights Out with David Spade and E!'s Busy Tonight have failed to catch on. Meanwhile, cable talk shows that run less frequently like Desus & Mero, Real Time with Bill Maher, Last Week with John Oliver and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee have continued to thrive.

How do you define thriving? Trevor pulls fewer viewers than Larry Wilmore's show that was cancelled. Samantha Bee hasn't pulled over one million viewers in years and averages under 700k in her most recent episodes. With streaming and other outlets (youtube, gaming, etc), people are just finding other ways to entertain themselves, and as such, the nightly talk show format is slowly dying.
