Anyone else besides me find it particularly odd that this show hyperfocuses on teen pregnancy....

... and in all of ten seasons, never ONCE brought up homosexuality?

Being a Christian-centered family, I would've thought the issue would come up more than once. It would've made things EXTREMELY interesting if it was ever introduced in more than just passing and they would have to struggle with their religious beliefs and human morality...

..but they chose to keep mum about it and make it general black/white issues. Gay rights VS Christian beliefs would be too much a gray area to play in. ^^;

I like to think maybe one of the twins grew up "that direction" XD

The "h-word" was mentioned once, in the episode "I hate you". Eric tells Simon that homosexuals were among those who were sent to Nazi concentration camps. But the topic by itself was never really addressed.

They never did an episode about abortions either. I guess that those two subjects were so extremely hot-button, that the show's writers just decided to stay away from them.

It was also mentioned in the season ten episode named "Got MLK?" Kevin at one point named off the different forms of hate that people can express through whatever choice of action it is that they decide to go with.

I remember that episode.

Homosexuality is only mentioned in passing, but nobody on that show had an opinion on it.

It is funny how they rehashed some issues repeatedly, but never quite had the guts to go there. Probably because there was no way they could take a stand without ticking off a good portion of the audience. As you said, it was too much a gray area.

They are Christian, and homosexuality is mentioned in the Christian text of Leviticus 18:22. So the show did address it:

“Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.”

My mistake. My thoughts were in my own country, where it ended it started in 2000 and ended in 2011.

I just recently went back and rewatched the show after having loved when I was younger, but not remembering all that much. I personally found it a relief that the show didn't really deal with the topic of homosexuality. I don't care what anyone's stance is, I am just tired of it. These days you can't watch a show without dealing with the topic, and the constant arguing about it grates on my nerves. There are just so many people on both sides of the issue that are just hateful.

They likely avoided discussing abortion and homosexuality because there was no way to handle that without alienating both the conservative Christians and the liberal viewers. 7th Heaven you could argue, was a relic of a particular movement to make Christianity trendy and cater to an Evangelical audience that wanted a fantasy world where Christianity was still relevant. This also included Veggie Tales, purity rings, WWJD bracelets, Touched by an Angel, and coffee and bagel church sermons.

Unlike today, in the '90s every tv show and movie didn't have to have homosexuals. Just a sweet nostalgic memory.
