One thing I don't understand

There's one thing bothering me... from the very first time Kathryn met Cole she was saying that she feels like she met him before... and on the end she says she remember's him as he is now (with a with and moustache)... what does that mean? How can she have any previous memory of him as only Cole was there as a kid?

What about when she sees young Cole at the airport, just as adult Cole was dying in her arms? She looks up and spots a little boy looking directly at them and smiles. At first, I didn't think she knew it was the younger version of him but now I'm not so sure....she smiles a little, as if she might've known...Otherwise why would she smile at a little boy who just witnessed such a horrific scene?

I've always thought that she recognized the kid was a pretty huge leap. But hey, she's obviously intelligent, and awesome for having figured everything out so quickly!

I've always thought she only knew Cole from the war photo, but I never noticed her saying she knew the moustache version of him. That's now one of the two things I don't get about this movie.

The other is John Leguizamo's character giving Cole the gun at the airport; why does he do this? The scientists from the future know the timeline can't be changed and that Cole is only sent back to retrieve information, so what are they hoping to achieve by giving him the gun?
