no Blu-Ray? Strange Days indeed

this movie is about dirty cops killing a famous rapp artist, while someone accidently records it, inciting race riots.

Strange Days indeed.

And not available on DVD or BLURAY for American players? Nice.

reply

I ordered mine from Germany. British release was censored.

reply

Yeah, I found other regions on Amazon, but you'd think they could drop an NTSC version. Oh well.

reply

Region A. Blu Ray from film is 24 fps, never ntsc or pal.

reply

i mean playable in America players

Strange Days is grossly underrated. It should make lists of great sci-fi films of all-time but it doesn't. I don't know why. It's sci-fi/noir at a top level.

reply

I agree AND disagree. It had all the parts for great sci-fi, and delivered it all really well! BUT, they ruined it with the "Big (non)-twist" at the end: "You don't understand how big this is" yet, overall, it was not BIG at all: just one corrupt guy. Making the entire point just a "Meh... why did I watch this??" moment. I was very disappointed with that. You don't stick your ending, you loose 90% of your audience.

40 mill budget, 8 mill GLOBAL take. Very sad. Should have fixed the ending.

STILL, it is a GREAT Science Fiction movie, dealing with interesting concepts, and very well made!!!

I love the relationship between Bassett and Fiennes. They both nail their roles.

reply

If this movie was made now the twist and ending would've been different.

reply

The lack of stars and vague title screwed it.

reply

WatchMojo on YouTube started including it on their sci fi top 10 lists I noticed
Just about every movie buff I know who's seen it thinks it's an excellent movie.

reply

Bully for WatchMojo. It's an incredible movie, and I think it should be more well-known. If you're a movie buff, sci-fi fan, or both - and you haven't seen it - I'd definitely say you should check it out.

I have it on DVD but I did buy it years ago. Although it is a little dated, it's one of my favourites from 95. I was working at a movie theatre when it was released and I watched it more than a few times while I should have been working.

reply

True, but every single sci fi movie is dated, or will show it's age somehow, inevitably. I think Strange Days gets away with it because it's based in 1999, and not some distant future, and so everything felt "in it's place" to me.

Agreed

STRANGE DAYS HAS A DECENT DVD RELEASE,ALTHOUGH IT IS OOP THESE DAYS...YOU CAN GET ONE FOR 10 TO 15 BUCKS ON EBAY...NEVER HAS RECEIVED A NORTH AMERICAN BLU RAY RELEASE...IF YOU HAVE A REGION FREE PLAYER YOU CAN GET THE BLU RAY FOR ABOUT THE SAME PRICE AS THE DVD.

Although it has a decent IMDb score, this movie is criminally underrated. This movie is fantastic and it's a crying shame that it's not more well-known. Most people that have seen this movie love it (there's a user here that even took the lead character's name for their screen name). It's my favorite Ralph Fiennes movie (tied with Wuthering Heights). And the kiss between Ralph and Angela Bassett, while not all that long, is to me one the best on-screen kisses ever!! Great cast as well including Vincent D'Onofrio, Juliette Lewis, Tom Sizemore, Michael Wincott, William Fichtner, and Glenn Plummer. I highly recommend this movie!!!!

Yup, that’s me! Haha…Love this fucking movie! Very under appreciated flick, and I’m still patiently waiting around for that North American Blu-Ray release 😆! Even have an official (and oversized) promotional movie poster, and a authentically signed promo pic from the movie of Fiennes and Bassit ☺️.

I have a weird feeling that this movie is going to get a second wind eventually. I mean, hell, both Katherine Bigalow and James Cameron are attached to it. It’s actually a little mystifying to me that it doesn’t garner more attention 🤷🏻‍♂️

And…the kiss it at end really is a fantastic movie kiss!

Strange Days is one of the best movies of the 90's... I love the rich visual texture of cinematography. Bigelow did an outstanding job and should have won director oscar for it (or split it half with David Fincher, who did Se7en the same year).

reply

The 90s were a fantastic and lush era of cinema (and music, I’d add). Great material everywhere, and you didn’t have to look that hard for it either. IMO, That a movie like Strange Days flew under the radar is a testament to how strong the talent was back then.

I’m also a huge Dark City fan, which I weirdly throw in the same bunch of under appreciated sci-fi movies of the era. Dark City was fantastic, and pre-dated The Matrix by a year…but far fewer people bought a ticket to see Dark City 😔
