It's overdone, mostly generic and makes the movie a bit less scary.

Somewhat ironic considering Howard Shore also did the score for Silence of the Lambs a few years before, and the music in that film was perfect for creating a scary atmosphere.

It only distracted me in one scene. When they are looking at John Doe's apartment. It feels obtrusive. Silence might have worked better.
