Truly Dark Masterpiece
Fincher’s black heart, artistic eye and smart brains spewed forth something beautifully nasty in this unforgettable slice of 90’s nihilism.
The film throbs with dread as the detectives descend further and further into John Doe’s head, never showing us the horrific violence, but cueing our imaginations to fill in the extraordinary suffering of the victims by showing us the gruesome remains of his ‘work’.
But the worst is saved for last, when you realise that the fleeting moments of tenderness and humanity in the film are there not as relief from the blackness, but as its greatest weapon, in a twist ending that will scar your mind forever.
We’re well overdue another thriller from Fincher.
