Se7en incomplete?

I rewatched "se7en" and I didn't understand something.
-Why is Mills still alive (Brad Pitt). He became wrath and killed John Doe (which is envy) but wrath lived.
Is John Doe's work incomplete?
-Why was Tracy (Brad's wife) killed? Could it be that the box contained a random head or just blood and not her actual head, something to make it look like his wife was killed?

reply

No, I'm sure the point was to keep the victim of wrath alive to tell the rest of the world his story. Otherwise it would be quickly forgotten.

Tracy did not represent any sin, but was simply collateral damage to get Mills to kill Doe.

reply

His goal is to spread his message, his sinners need to suffer but not necessarily die (Sloth, Mills), and non-sinners may well be killed in the process (Tracy, the baby)

reply

In 1995 New York reinstated death penalty, so maybe that was what John Doe was counting on.

Yeah, it was Tracy, Somerset was an experienced detective, he was unlikely wrong about that.

reply

It couldn't be a random head as John Doe also knew she was pregnant. It's highly unlikely he could have found that information from a source other than Tracey as it would only be Somerset and potentially a medical practioner. I suppose he could have gone through rubbish but given he was forced to speed things up that doesn't really work.
