The ending is unrealistic and should have been rewritten

In real life, it's unlikely that an enraged person would have merely given his wife's murderer a clean execution. Those types of things tend to inspire brutality. It's more likely that Brad Pitt's character would have shot the suspect in the genitals or knees and then brutally assaulted him, leaving him maimed but probably alive.

I'm wondering why the director made such a huge oversight in his script.

I agree. I actually thought about this.

I would've shot him from waist up, until finally reaching his head. To make him suffer.

reply

Yes, because movies are supposed to be documentaries. So, what usually happens when a killer sends a detective's wife's head in a box to him? Please tell so we can remake this bitch.

reply

1. Why injure him?

2. Why shoot him anywhere except the head, he probably didn't want to risk him living.

How is it that unrealistic?

reply

I get why Brad Pitt killed Doe outright, in the context of this movie. Remember that each victim (i.e. 'the sinner') is murdered outright. Doe's sin - by his own admission - is envy. Hence, he dies (by Brad Pitt's hand).

Mills asks "What the hell are you doing?" Somerset answers: "I'm retiring".

I'd buy that for a dollar!
