Was it his original plan?

CONTAINS SPOILER...

Anyone else believe that the end scene was his original plan? John Doe did say that he had to change his plan after he was almost caught in his apartment building. I didn't spot any future victim except for the girl in the "Lust" scene.

reply

@greek316 Yes, I think it was still his original plan, despite the detectives finding his home.

He tells Mills on the phone, "I'll be re-adjusting my schedule in light of today's little setback." So he had to change his schedule, but his plan stayed the same.

reply

It couldn't have been his original plan unless he knew Mills would be transferred over a year in advance and knew he would be easily angered. He probably was just going to kill two more people, but instead saw an opportunity to become a martyr when he saw how wrathful Mills was.

Remember the scene where Mills loses his temper and starts yelling at the photographer on the stairs (who later turns out to be Doe)? That was when Doe first saw Mills' "wrath" on display, and I believe it's when he chose him to be part of the plan. He probably considered himself pretty lucky that one of the detectives who was chasing him was also a perfect candidate to be one of his victims.

reply

It certainly became his plan by the time his residence was discovered. Why else would Doe have not pulled the trigger when his gun was against Mills' head in that alley.

reply

Why wouldn't mills have trained his wife to use a gun and have one on hand around the house at all times. He was a dummy to start with.

She despises guns, remember?

reply

I'm with those who say he changed his plan when he encountered Mills. He must have had a different victim in mind previously.
