A wery underated movie
Anyone seen this one. It's one of the best Philip K. Dick movies out there, much better than The Imposter, and much more faithfull than say, Total Recall.

I totally agree with you,
I just watched half of the movie and I was impressed, very impressed, it was dirty, gritty and Peter Weller held the film together. I am looking forward to watching the complete film sometime in the future.
And the type 3 screamer is the scariest one, it scared the crap out of me the first time I realized what and who it was.

???
You watched half of the movie???
WTF???
why not whole movie???
Finally a movie that is faithful to Philip K Dick. Having been going through the video library trying to get teh movies based on his work. Naturally they didn't make it quite as apocolyptic as 'Second Variety' but hey.
Are there downfalls, yes there are. Some of the worst dialogue ever written, and some pretty crappy acting also. Loved the fact that they didn't play down the initial shock of them shooting the... well... I will refer to it as 'Type 1' or the 'First Variety' so as not to wreck it for anyone. However the end really was dissapointing. For those who haven'tread the short story, give it a go. It's called 'Second Variety' and can is farily easy to find.
Good call everyone,
this struck me as one of the most faithful adaptations of PKD. Particularly with the pacing of the first part.
i enjoyed this a lot, especially when compared with the verhoeven and Scott interpretations of PKD (Which i still like as movies, but not as much for their PKD flavour).
I agree.
This was a great movie. Good sci fi, good plot and held me for duration. Low budget..dune like environmnet. Definently underated
Oh absolutely!
Total Recall totally wrecked "We Remember It For You Wholesale", Imposter was not bad except for where they went into the whole save-the-poor-underground-noncitizens thing, and Minority Report was raped completely.
Paycheck was pretty good - I liked how that was adapted, it worked well.
Every time I go back and read "Second Variety", I can see the scenes from the movie that match up with the story (especially the whole David conversation) and I think that it really sucks that this movie is so unknown and Minority Report was supposed to be so hot (bleah!)
This one truly does justice to PKD's world.
"My only plan is, I have no plan."
I just watched this thismorning . Now I thought it was quite a good film , and opened my eyes to Welers abilities . However , I'm not sold on the "Tremors" special effects , or some of the nuts dialog . Althogh I was set aback to hear it was made in 95 , in retrospect it looks like hellova good special effect for then , tremors aside . The only reason I watched it was because of the grimy look about it , and the snow scenes were very nice looking . I dare say if they got Riddle Me Scott in to direct it , then it could have been a great film . I think it's safe to say that Total Recal was never going to stick to PKD's words exactly , but you can't fault the sheer 80'sness of it . Don't even start on crap like the Matrix and Minority report , the later being a good film , but neither staying faithfull .

I and my friend were looking for something to rent and took this. Damn why hadn't I heard of this before?! Great movie!
I don't kill people, I torch them.
i also think it's underrated and that's a great sci fi movie.
for a similar movie , i would recommand Pitch Black 1 and Chronicles of riddick (Pitch Black 2) that's also really underrated (the second one is better than the first one)
I find it hard to believe that you can compare Screamers to Pitch Black an The chronicles of Riddick. In Screamers there is a good story a believable love intrest and some believable action. Pitch Black an its sequel are mind stumbing Hollywood entertainement there is just a lot of action so that you don't think about the story are the idiocy of the plot. I find it hard to believe that an idiot like Vin Diesel has to save the Earth from destruction. Please feel free to comment me.
shareOkay, here's one commenting you: you're right !
:)
I'm sorry, a believable love interest? Cough.
It wasn't believable at all, it was completly absurd. He knew that chick for a day maybe, and suddenly he is in love with her? It wasn't developed at all, it was completly illogical. In fact the only surprise in this movie for me was that they somehow were in love.
This was possibly one of the worst movies I ever saw, at first the screamers just seemed like a back story, and then it's like the director decided "Hey lets focus the whole movie on these things!"
The premise was interesting, but it wasn't good enough to keep this turd afloat.
This is probably the cut off point of b - movie sci/fi, without being CGI ridden. You won't find a movie like this in the theaters anymore, which is too bad, because Screamers has a solid plot and cool visuals, for those who appreciate post-apocalyptic scenarios, and ravaged, minimalist scenery. This is a very desolate sci/fi film which doesn't rely on flashy effects, but the surroundings, character dialogue, and some creepy ideas. Peter Weller puts in another solid performance as usual. I'd say Philip K. Dick would be satisfied with the bleakness of Screamers. I get a weird feeling when I watch this, the same type of feeling I get when I watch 1984.
shareVery true, I was shocked to see it only gets 5.6/10. I gave it an 8/10.
