Lack of Diversity in Sailor Moon

Let's be real for a moment: The protectors of our galaxy should not all hail from Japan, nor should they all be light skinned, pale females. We do have the occasional change of skin tone in the anime with characters like Setsuna and Sailor Lead Crow, but for the most part, Sailor Moon is severely lacking in Ethnic diversity. No African based characters, nor Hispanic, or even South East Asians.

The question of the hour: How does this lack of diversity effect you? Is it still too early to modernize these characters and include a more diverse cast?

For the sake of full disclosure (and just so we don't get any defensive arguing) Sailor Moon does a pretty amazing job of representing the LGBTQ community, and a vastly superior job than many other animes of representing the journey of a woman within the medium.

Let's be friends!

OP it sounds like you would have been a fan of Saban's Sailor Moon had he got the rights to this anime 20 years ago and not DiC.

Remember that leaked Toonsmaker pilot video of his Sailor Moon showed a diverse cast.

Personally it never bothered me because like others Japanese animation it is just an exaggerated drawing of Japanese characters.

If any, maybe they will make a Sailor Earth and Sailor Sun and they will add the diversity to the team.

and the whole world has to answer right now just to tell you once again. Who's Bad?

If you believe that each one of the Senshi needed to be a different ethnic group that hails from a different country, then you're kind of missing the point. How in the bloody hell is Usagi even supposed to go find them if they're off in Australia or somewhere else? She's fourteen and has no means of even doing so. The other Senshi exist to PROTECT HER, their princess. Of course they had to be reborn into nearby locations so that they would be readily on hand to serve their purpose as her protectors.

THis is why politicial correctness needs to be kept on a very tight leash and why people need to stop obsessing with "diversity". It CAN and HAS impacted works negatively. Besides which, it is a Japanese show set in Japan. No, the lack of diversity does not bother me, nor should it you.

Who gives a sh*t. Why does everything need to be diverse nowadays? Being diverse is only necessary if the story is about race, etc. This show has nothing to do with race, so it doesnt have to be diverse, if it doesnt want to. & its annoying that all these dumb over-sensitive people think everything is racist, just cuz its not diverse, UGH!

In real life, not every single group you see is diverse & has a person from every race in it. So yeah, It doesnt matter.

Lol I'm not saying the show needs a person from every race, I'm saying they could include more than just super light skinned people because that's literally what almost all of the characters are. THAT is not real life. And it is racist. This is a problem that exists in almost all the media we consume not just Sailor Moon, but it's something that needs to be discussed, not ignored. It's easy to say, "Why do we need diversity???" when it's you that you see represented everywhere.

I still love Sailor Moon and think it has several positive aspects but it's not perfect and there's no reason to pretend it is.

reply

"THAT is not real life."

Lol, but the rest of the show is???

There are not a lot of dark-skinned people in Japan. That IS real life. Just deal with it.

reply

I've learned that even raising any question of ethnic diversity among Sailor Moon fans causes a panic.

In fact, most Sailor Moon fans I've run across will call you racist for even suggesting that the Senshi being ethnically Japanese objectively are so much better than them being any other race. This thread's reaction is mild in comparison to what I have been through.

The lack of diversity -- and more specifically, the background from which they come -- does affect me because it is a silent, unavoidable reminder that one can never be too rich or pale in this world, and merely reflects the racism of everyday life.

reply

For me, it has absolutely nothing to do with race and everything to do with logic and practicality. It is a Japanese show that takes place in Japan. What else could they be? The racial diversity in Japanese is infamously almost non-existent. Sure, there was some other ethnicities living there now, but they are a severe, severe minority.
Okay, sure, they could have made it so that the girls each hail from a different country, but that's not exactly handy when four of them are supposed to be Sailor Moon's GUARDIANS. Making the others girls Canadian or French just makes writing how they can all be together as a group more of a headache than it needs to be. For the sake of simplicity, it's just better to have the main characters be native Japanese.

I have no problem with all of them being Japanese, but why are all of them light skinned? Save for Pluto who is only a supporting character. Not all Japanese people are light skinned.

reply

It's just the art style. Most anime pretty much looks that way.

reply

It is true that most anime looks that way, but certainly not all of it. Even Sailor Moon has darker skinned characters, but they're obscure, and pushed to the side for all of the light skinned characters. I mean racism and colorism exist all over the world, so is it really all that surprising it would permeate the media we consume too? It's a definite issue with almost everything, even beyond Sailor Moon, but that doesn't make it not problem. That doesn't make it something that should be ignored. I'm still going to watch Sailor Moon, but I don't want to act like there aren't issues, when there are, either.

reply

What colorism? The skin tones of Sailor Moon's main cast are not common in Japan. Hell, they don't even look Japanese at all.

Colorism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination_based_on_skin_color .

reply

I know what colorism is, and I'm not seeing it here.

reply

The fact that they feature all light skinned characters and only have one three dimensional darker skinned character I would most definitely consider a consequence of colorism, but to each their own I guess.

reply

Or maybe it's not. Unless confirmed, could you please not look for malicious intent where there may be none? I prefer to just take an opus for what it is and enjoy it. I also prefer not to look for the bad in a work.
You already have a lot of representation for homosexuals with the Kunzite/Zoicite and Uranus/Neptune pairings. Why should Sailor Moon have to go through the list of minorities to make sure they check them all off?

Go make your own politically correct magical girl show if it bothers you so much.

reply

Regardless of intent, it is there. I'm not going to pretend something is perfect when it is not, doesn't mean I can't love the thing, it just means I'm not going to bask in ignorance in order to make myself feel more comfortable :)))

reply

You'll never convince me. I also never said it was perfect. I don't think it's perfect, but I also don't think any kind of racism went into its creation. I am also not basking in ignorance. I just highly doubt that the designers and other creative were twirling their handlebar mustaches trying to think up ways to exclude minorities.
You also ignored my point concerning Uranus and Neptune.

...You also complain about there being no minorities in Lord of the Rings, don't you?

"All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you." -Gandalf

reply

For the sake of simplicity, the characters could all be heterosexual, but clearly there is LGBT diversity and that aspect isn't just praised but staunchly defended.

Why is racial, ethnic, or even just skin-tone diversity considered PC, though?

reply

Good question. I also love how no one ever acknowledges that the main cast does not even look authentically Japanese.

I honestly hate the white-washing of Setsuna... She get's lighter and lighter. When in the book she appeared black.

Your mind is in Disturbia.

reply

Wrong. She was never black.

Watch this vid, You made a dumb comment that the charcters are drawn as white characters. You don't understand the artstyle they are not drawn as white characters nor do they look it

Some of your other posts made me laugh

Maybe nowadays the concept would likely be diffrent but back in 1990 i m sure Naoko was just catering to Japanese audiences. Very Few Anime back then ventured outside of Japan or brought characters with unique backgrounds together.
