Sword Fight

I think the final sword fight between Neeson and Roth might be one of the best ever filmed. Any thoughts?

I agree. Easily one of the best swordfights I've ever seen on film. Archie and Killearn are great. So evil yet so entertaining! Tim Roth's finest work in my opinion.

Yep, it's a great swordfighting scene -- certainly one of the finest I've ever seen.

If you want to see some more expert swordplay in film, check out The Mark of Zorro (the 1940 version with Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone). Rathbone was a master swordsman and his swordfights with Power are excellent.

Yes, Is probably the greatest sword fight in the story of the cinema and is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Being a Scot by ancestry, I particulary liked the movie for all my own reasons and was willing to overlook the obvious flaws. I was very pleased with the fact that a Scottish woman was protrayed as equally strong in her own right.

One of the things I always look for in a movie is a scene I have never seen before, hence the superb sword fight between Archibald Cunningham and Rob Roy McGreggor. I was in absolute shock and awl when Cunningham was "quarted" by Rob Roy and couldn't wait to see the movie again on TV. Well, much to my suprise the later part of the scene was completly cut out, a victim of editing for television!

I then purchased the video for the best value at the time, at WalMart, only to once again be disappointed that the later part of that scene had been cut out due to "family editing values".

The sword fight scene in its entirty can only be found on non-edited versions of VHS and DVD, if available.

You purchased the video and it was still cut???

That's terrible. The later part of the scene? Are you referring to Archie staggering around gurgling blood?

What country do you live in that has censored versions on VHS and DVD?

reply

the best and most realistic sword fight i've ever seen was in "robin hood, prince of thieves". best one ever.

I don't know much about sword fighting films in general. But of the sword fights that come to mind, this scene always sticks out. Even though it was slightly unrealistic that Archie Cunningham would've stood there long enough to let Rob Roy hold his sword while Roy takes a couple minutes to clumsily pick his own sword off the ground and slice Archie down the middle. It's an unrealistic moment in an otherwise epic sword battle. It's great by just how it was choreographed, how Cunningham is like a cat playing with a mouse. The tension and intensity of the scene, all well executed Rob Roy is clearly exhausted, wounded, and out of breath while Archie is not even breathing hard. Brute strength and Roy's passion and anger won out in the end. Great movie.

This is a great film, but for sheer gripping violence the fight scene between Romeo and Tybalt in Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliette is awesome.

I can't stand a sword fight where they look like they're trying to hit each other's swords and not each other, a la some of the less good star wars fights (although in the context of those films i suppose they work). In a historical drama like this though it just ruins the immersion and believability of the film.

This one thankfully does not fall into that category , they really look like they're going for each other. I also loved the fight between Hector and Achillies in Troy, realy does seem like two extremely adept ancient warriors trying for blood, I think that could well be the best one I've ever seen.

Yes, very good sword fight, but.... Scaramouch with Steward Granger is still the more realistic (Maybe?) of the two.
I believe it was the longest swordfight in movie history, yes?

This is the best sword fight, for certain. I also love the first battle in The Princess Bride for the cheek, and the second battle in Rashomon for the humor.

Bone chilling!

Great movie!

Definitely one of the best, and definitely the most realistic. But I especially like the ending, which showed that it was not skill nor speed that won the match, but pure strength of will.

I mean, it's not every man who can grab the business-end of a rapier, and then cleave his opponent from shoulder to short-rib. ;}

Easily one of the best sword fights ever filmed.. everything about the duel was great, very realistic with a powerful finish. Watching that particular scene is probably one of, if not THE best part of Rob Roy.

Glad I found this thread, this is probably the greatest swordfight I've ever seen in a movie (haven't had the opportunity to see some of the other ones that have been mentioned.) Does anyone know if it was %100 Neeson and Roth doing that scene, or whether stunt men are used for some of it? It's hard to fathom these two getting this fight so spot-on, but my hat's off to them if they did.

I have to agree. Scaramouche is the best as far as grace and style also length. But it was noted in another reply the difference in style. If you notice after the initial encounter, Rob Roy is getting winded, had Archie just stuck to business he would have won, but his ego got in the way and Rob's sword got in the way of him continueing to live. Oh well.

reply

Scaramouche was disappointing to me, the final duel was really one sided.

For my money, the best of all time is Flynn vs. Rathbone from Adventures of Robin Hood.

Any swordfight with Rathbone is excellent including that one, but I have to give it to Power vs. Rathbone in The Mark of Zorro.

EDIT: Which I see I've already mentioned in an earlier post in this thread (four years ago), so never mind.
