The only actor I think doesn't fit the character well enough is "Rita Wilson". For me, she's the only one who seems different as an adult. I don't "Feel" her as Chrissy! I don't think she looks the part, sounds the part or acts the part at all. She doesn't seem to fit! Everyone else was really great if not perfect, ESPECIALLY the four young girls! Who would you replace and why?
I totally disagree with you - I think Rita was the perfect adult Chrissy!
Honestly, I think the casting was pretty perfect for this movie. The only one that I don't entirely buy is Rosie O'Donnell as adult Roberta - something about it doesn't quite sit right with me. But I don't know if there's anyone that I could picture being better so... yeah.
The younger girls were cast perfectly, but I could see a younger Brittany Murphy being Chrissy. Too bad that both actresses have passed away :(
I, too, would definitely say that I would replace Rosie O'Donnell. I just can't imagine Christina Ricci becoming this loud-mouthed fat slob. Now, over 15 years later, Christina Ricci looks very much like the younger Christina Ricci and Thora Birch looks like the younger Thora Birch.
Looks aside, people's accents don't usually change, remembering that Roberta stayed as a doctor in Indiana and did not go to live in NYC! In the film, Rosie acted as if she was in one of her own talk-shows rather than playing the older Roberta.
^What the last 3 said: they couldn't have picked a better perso than Rita for Chrissy (who had Ashleigh's facial features, hair color, expressions, way of speaking, etc. nailed) but Rosie, while a great actor, was a terrible choice for Roberta (and I had never even noticed the NY accent. I mean I heard it but didn't really process it).
Rena Sofer looks exactly like how I imagined older Roberta in the script, although I don't know how old she would have been back then, and she doesn't really look all that much like Roberta, but then neither did Melanie with Thora. http://www.allcelebrityhairstyles.com/rena-sofer/rena-sofer-hairstyles .jpg
Brittany Murphy was a great actor but she would have been too old for Chrissy. Kirsten Dunst was the original choice but she didn't want to put on weight so Ashleigh got the part instead. I would have loved to see her as Chrissy.
Don’t be suspicious of me or I’ll eat yer livers. Arrr. -Brendan Gleeson as Moody.
Rosie O'Donnell was miscast. I just didn't buy that Christina Ricci's Roberta would have grown up to become this overweight, kind of obnoxious woman who lacked any of the charm, grace, or softer side of Roberta that we see in Ricci's scenes. Someone like Geena Davis would have been a better choice. Janeane Garofalo would have been a decent Roberta but she had a role as the waitress. I felt like Rosie played adult Roberta as too masculine.
Ooh, I'd love Geena as Roberta. Weirdly her voice or way of speaking reminds me of Rosie's. She's very feminine looking and sounding but many tomboys grow out of that phase and turn girly when they're older so it's OK.
I don't think Janeane can show nearly as much emotion as Ricci though.
They were going to make Roberta a lesbian but then decided against it, so I think that is why Rosie is casted as Roberta. However I do kind of agree, as Roberta was the only athletic one, so it doesn't really make sense that she would grow up to be the only one who was over weight.
I'm glad there's such a consensus on Rosie O'Donnell being miscast. It's always bothered me. I like her but she was so wrong for this. I think either Geena Davis or Holly Hunter would have been better as adult Roberta.
Actually I thought the Rita Wilson/Ashliegh Aston Moore casting was perfect, the physical resemblance was very believable and they had the same mannerisms and characteristics. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
If I were to replace one actress, I'd have to agree with everybody else, I'd replace Rosie O'Donnell. Maybe I'm biased because I really can't stand Rosie O'Donnell, but it just wasn't believable that a young Christina Ricci would grow up to be an obnoxious slob. The younger Roberta had a sweet side to her, yet had that "edge" that made her charming in a way. I'm sorry but there is nothing sweet or charming about Rosie O'Donnell.
Looks like everyone agrees and I agree too. Rosie O'Donnell was horribly miscast as adult Roberta.
Actually, I really didn't like the whole 'Now' part of the movie. All the adult versions of the girls were just awful and it spoilt the movie on the whole quite a bit for me, but the worst was definitely Rosie O'Donnell who was nothing like Christina Ricci's character.
I agree with this. I just watched the movie again yesterday, and found the "now" parts to be pretty useless. It made it seem too much like a ripoff of "Stand By Me" (adult writer reflects upon their last summer as a child.) They should have made the child scenes longer and cut the adult scenes altogether, or done something different with the adult characters.
And to echo what others have said, Rosie O'Donnell wasn't Roberta; she was Rosie O'Donnell. There was NO consistency there, NO resemblance to young Roberta at ALL. It bugs me every single time.
Oh an while we are on the subject I always thought that Anna Clumsky would've made a better Teeny. To me resembles Melanie Griffith a lot more than Thora Birch did.
