Why is this film rated so low??

I can't believe how low this film is rated! It was brilliantly funny, touching, and just a great film overall! I have to say that I'm very surprised at the low rating!

reply

I agree, I would give it no less than 6. That's just people for ya I guess.

reply

I loved it! It was so cute and Hugh was hot! The ending was so cute. Robin Williams was so funny too.

reply

I agree. It's my all-time favorite Hugh Grant movie, for all those reasons.

I don't remember ever laughing so hard as in the scene in the toy store with the dinosaur. Tom Arnold is NOT one of my favorite people, but in this movie he was FUNNY!! So was Robin Williams! Loved it! I give it an 8!

I agree, this film has become one of my keeper comedies, that is, the ones that I like to pop in when I want to laugh. Call me corny, but I thought it was funny from beginning to end. The part that makes me laugh the hardest and every time I see it is Joan Cusack cursing her husband during her labor. Laughing now just thinking of it. Hugh Grant was hilarious, man, everyone in the movie came together to make it a huge comedic success, in my view.

reply

Well, Tinypaperheart, I'm not saying that I have the entire answer to your question, but I think it might be because the movie doesn't really know what it want's to be. I mean: Is it slapstick? Is it just a comedy? Is it a drama? Is it...???? I don't know what it is anymore.

Another thing that will make sure the rating is so low is because it uses every possible stereotype when it comes to babies. They are oh so cute and nice, they are a miracle, they are the best that can happen to you... and if a man can't understand that, he's just an *beep* with no heart, grasping to his youth that is slipping away through the fingers of his hand like sand.

I agree that it had funny parts (for instance the praying mantice part was absolutely brilliant), but all in all this is just a poor girl movie and as you know about 50% of this world's population is still made up by men.

Yes, I don't know what it is like to have a child (I'm only 26 and not planning on having one soon) and you probably do. I believe everybody who says it is the best thing that happened to them, but they shouldn't judge the people that don't want children. Children can be great fun, but can be a great burden too. The movie doesn't show that part enough...

I hope you're not offended by my comments

Greetings
Philip

I'm female and pushing sixty, (hard but it won't go away!) and I agree with you. The good bits in this film, like the Praying Mantis and the squishy ending were very good but the bad bits were very bad. The physical comedy in every instance went too far for too long. It stopped being funny long before it stopped. The cliches were horribly overdone too, both about children and peoples reactions to them. Though I liked the boy in the Psychologist's office, both of them actually!

when hugh grant first saw this film, he was so ashamed to have been involved with such a bad film that he went and slept with a rather ugly prostitute. that's a measure of how bad this film is

reply

I liked it. I still laugh.

I loved this line...

Gail: Who is it, honey?
Marty: My mother
Gail: But your mother's dead.
Marty: Yea, I know, it's really weird

I am certainly no fan of Chris Columbus (a hack of the first order), but this movie is probably his best, along with Mrs. Doubtfire. It also ranks with that and "The Goonies" as one of his better screenplays. Robin Williams is pretty damn funny (mostly improvised from what I understand). Sure it is contrieved and cliched, but the actors are quite game and Jeff Goldblum and Joan Cusack are both really good in smaller roles here. The sequence where Hugh is driving Julianne to the hospital is worthy of Jerry Lewis.

Oh come on Vince, you can't tell me you don't look forward to watching the Home Alones when christmas time comes around, those are classic guilty pleasures.

reply

Maybe the first one. But Columbus overall sucks the big one. Notice how much better the 3rd HP movie was (and the 4th looks like it will be the best). He has no idea how to block/frame comedy scenes whatsoever, and his own movies depend way too heavily on saccharine music cues to get responses out of people, which I have no problem with, but he does it like ALL THE TIME (see Stepmom for the worst example).

I have to agree that this film is rated waaaayyyy too low. It was the funniest movie I've ever seen. I also have to agree about the part when Gail was cursing her husband during labor. The part with Arnie the Dinosaur was funny as well, especially the fact that a costumed character would do that. And the part where Marty said Samuel was a good kisser was hilarious! I also liked the fact that Rebecca had a calm demeanor, but used a sense of humor as well. Overall, I would give it 9.6/10. It was one of the best movies ever.

reply

I admire the fact that Hugh was man enough to own up to his misdeed. That's so rare in Hollywood. Must be the British in him.

She wasn't that ugly. Booking photos just aren't that flattering. Also he didn't 'sleep' with her, I think it was just a bj in his car.

Maybe Ms. Hurley, though gorgeous, wasn't giving him what he needed.

reply

I agree, I think this movie is totally underated.

reply

i totally agree with you. i just watched this movie last night because i am a fan of Julianne Moore and i loved it! i can't believe it was rated that low. i gir it a 10!

reply

I saw this in the movie theater. And everyone was falling out of their chairs for laughing so hard.

reply

Maybe because they are trying so hard to force the humor. Tom Arnold with his "annoying neighbor" routine was so over the top so as not to be funny.
Julianne Moore's character walking out because H Grant was late for her ultrasound was mopey at best. Who walks out on tardiness?
And we're supposed to laugh at a speeding car plowing into people and having to take them to the hospital too? I wished the movie had ended when the two lead characters got married.
