Anyone else wish Rowena had come back at end concert?

I loved this movie, but at the grand closing concert I kept looking for Rowena. Did anyone else wish she'd come back to pay her respects? Were others curious as to whether she'd become a Broadway star? There was definitely a sense that a significant student was missing from this farewell concert. Perhaps they just didn't know what to do with her but surely creative screenwriters could have had some touching or clever moment here.

I didn't expect to see her at the end because she did not listen to Mr Holland. He said to wait until after school to pursue her dream of singing on Broadway, but went anyway.

I always thought that Rowena's last look at Mr. Holland from the steps of the bus was saying, "You loser. I'm giving you the chance to achieve your dream, and you haven't got the guts to grab it." She's too immature to understand the complexities of life.

If that's the case, it makes sense that she would have no desire to reconnect with him.

reply

Maybe ill timed, but at least she was following her dream.

Gotta' swing the bat to hit the ball.

If you look at the bio's of real actresses, you'll see that most of them worked their way up.

There are some who didn't, but not every story is the same.

I looked for her, too, and was a bit saddened that she didn't make the finale.

But then again, Life is like that: we do have some people in our lives who are a plot point that we never ever hear from them again.

I did not like her. I'm glad she was not there.

reply

I don't wanna see her old, with a husband that doesn't really love her, and with 2 children. Let us remember her as she was.

reply

Also, know her future would be troubling.

Different from other students, she really liked what she did and threw away her whole life for it.

Did she succeed? Did she got marry and lived as he did?

If she'd succeed, she'd be the ultimate success in his life, she'd live the dream he hoped for and failed. Then, she'd not fit on a room full of friends and admirers, she'd need a time and attention only for herself.

And if she didn't suceed, it'd be very sad. What matter would it have if he had touched a lot of students, if the most important one was unable to fulfill her dreams?

reply

Exactly!

If we had seen her return, it would have been a matter of "did she succeed?" And the answer to that question could have changed some of the dynamics in the film, if just slightly.

No. It would have made things too complicated. Rowena and Mr. Holland had a useful relationship, that I'm sure taught them both something valuable. But it would have been very uncomfortable for them to meet again. It most likely would have ruined one of the greatest days, of Mr. Hollands life.

I know that people have said this is in a variety of ways....even stating that they had filmed her in the back of the final concert but that part got cut....And there's a great reason for her not being in the movie...

This movie is about a small town music teacher who lives life as a good person changing lives, being a loving father (despite the challenges), and loving his wife...Punctuated by the unknown multitudes celebrating at the end of his career.

If Rowena shows up it removes that punctuation...Questions arise...Was he actually a good man with the love of his life off in NY and now back to meet up with him? Did he really love his wife and he just stayed because of duty? Will he stay a good man?

This is about his OPUS....both his life and his symphony....And both of those become minimized with her standing in the back of the room.
