This movie has a much better cyberpunk feel to it than the Matrix

This movie has all the elements of those good old 80s cyberpunk novels:
- internet in 3D
- silly gadgets
- clothing
- disease
- mercenaries working for big corporations
- augmented dolphin
- hot side chick

The Matrix has very little of it. The only thing is plugs in the head and robots. All else is just the normal world, where we have to pretend that it's a simulation, but visually speaking it's not very cyberpunky. The Matrix is just an ordinary sci-fi, but not truly cyberpunk, if you get my drift.

If somebody asked me to show them a prime example of a cyberpunk movie, this movie would be a much better example than the Matrix.

I agree .
I dont think anyone's touting The Matrix as top "CyberPunk" exactly , although it technically has some of the elements

JM is very underrated movie.
Better than the Matrix in a lot of ways

I've just found an article on Johnny M :
https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/new-scifi-movies-on-netflix-november-2021-johnny-mnemonic

has some good info

and some complete crap like this :
Johnny Mnemonic is an overlooked gem in Reeves’ filmography that does deserve to sit in the shadow of The Matrix. It lacks the careful, cerebral elegance of The Matrix and unwisely doubles down on its video game-esque worldbuilding. (One of the film’s more laughable lines is when the year “2006” is uttered as “Twenty Oh-Six.”)

wtf!
