This film was rubbish

Reading through the comments on here I cannot believe those that said it was realistic. For a start the firms all wore scarves, hats and club shirts which is totally unrealistic and also stupid especially as they were trying to make out that they were an organised crew. The real low point in this film for me, was seeing one of the characters fire eating in the rock. How laughable is that. There was no attempt to recreate the casual style adopted by real football hooligans and the fight scene on the terrace (Valley Parade (I think)) was highly laughable as no clued up hooligan would get involved in a terrace ruck intentionally in this age of CCTV.

I recently watched the football factory an although this was also bollocks it did capture the flavour of what the football scene was all about in terms of dress, style and even music.

Reading what the poster of this thread said and can see where he/she is coming from but lacks a real understanding of the core of the film and age of it, presumably the time in which it is set. For me, the focus was on John and his fellow coppers and Johns transition from police to hooligan, not scalfs and hats. Yes, football factory is more to date and yes it is an okay film but even that is OTT in areas more black comedy, but for a real characterisation issue then this film is a masterpiece.

Just a thought!

it is set in the late 80's thou

like most of the films in this 'genre', the ones made in the 80's (and very early 90's) are gritty and somewhat more realistic than the overly stylised and 'cool' films you get from the mid/late 90's onwards. thats why football factory and that terrible green street are so disappointing. imo.

Has anyone bothered to look at the date right at the very end of the credits?

reply

I.D is the best of the hooligan films imo.

I agree about the film being rubbish but disagree with your comment about the firms clothing.

I thought the lowest point was Reece Dinsdale's comedy roaring. Well, maybe that and Pertwee's acting. Or possibly the decision to buy the jeans for the cast from the same wholesalers, to remove authenticity even more.

Yes, very much of its time, I did cringe at certain bits. The chants rang false and I think modern football gangs operate differently, but it still worked as a dramatic piece for me.
