Sorry but Pierce Brosnan is just not James Bond.

I recently rewatched the series and have to say that Pierce Brosnan (a fine actor), I liked him in Remington Steele and Mama Mia, is just not James Bond. He is unconvincing and tepid.

My definitive ranking of Bonds:
Connery
Craig
Lazenby
Moore
Dalton
Brosnan

reply

Nah, Lazenby would be under Moore and Dalton. I never disliked him but he's still the worst Bond.

reply

Brosnan was a good Bond. The problem was, the Bond films he was in were mediocre/poor.

reply

You are only partially right. He is just not a credible killer. A tax auditor or wine waiter.
I ranked Brosnan as the worst of the Bonds.

He was fine. His problem was that the movies he did had mediocre scripts.

reply

Yes I agree, if you mean by fine as in last place, I concur.

reply

He was awful. He never came across as his own man in the role. Him and the films he were in felt like a box ticking exercise of how a committee felt Bond should be.

He always came across as though he'd rather preen himself in front of the mirror than an actual Bond. If Roger Moore straightened his tie while he was underwater been shot at, he'd be crucified for it and yet that's exactly what Brosnan does in The World Is Not Enough.

I can't stand him in the role or his era.

reply

Really well said. Brosnan beta-Bond is not for me. Remember the one where Michelle Yeoh stole the movie with actual talent vs. a tv-actor trying to act tougn. He is Remingon Steel, or that Native Indian character, Grey Owl. Not James Bond for goodness sake. Brosnan is last place by far.

You posting this under Goldeneye instead of one of the weaker Brosnan films doesn't make sense. Goldeneye saved the franchise after the box office failures of the Dalton and the later, cheesier Moore Bond films. Brosnan's performance was part of its success and Goldeneye is usually high on the list of Bond film rankings. Even with how badly the Brosnan movies after Goldeneye were written and directed, no way is he the worst Bond.

reply

I agree Goldeneye is Brosnan's strongest Bond.
Don't forget, after successive bland and boring films after, the near franchise killing Die Another Day was the low point. Worst Bond by far. Are you saving this spot for someone else? Woody Allen?

The incredible Famke Janssen saved this movie. Brosnan just has no real presence or charisma. He is like a quirky, tax auditor, or insurance salesperson, or wine waiter. Sean Bean would have been a much better Bond. Rugged and believable.
