I haven't read the book. Having just watched most of (missed the first part) on satellite TV, I almost fell off the couch when I saw the credits "from the novel by James Herbert". Maybe I should read the book but I found the movie excellent.

somehow, I think it would be justified to bring back horsewhipping for those reviewers that canned it. And probably the marketers did all the wrong things; this isn't the typical family movie, rather much more adult in tone.
Which is why the ending is not sad, but fitting in a mature point of view,
