Why is Cher's dad so rude to Tai?

When Cher introduces Tai to Mel, he immediately says to Tai "Get out of my chair!" I know that it's meant to be funny since Mel is supposed to be this strict, tough as nails, nonsense individual (he is a lawyer after all). But still, I would imagine that your daughter is having one of her friends as a guest at your house, you would have the slightest clue to try to be polite for a moment.

He's rude to everyone, even Cher!

Who doesn't care, BTW, she's completely confident at home, she knows her father adores her and completely trusts her, and that at least with her, his brusque mannerisms are nothing but bluster.

I'm not talking about Mel acts in front of his own daughter in the privacy of their home, I'm talking about when he has to conduct himself towards guests like Tai in his very own house. And it isn't like Tai is an understandably perceived threat to Cher's well being like Christian.

He really is rude and brusque to everyone, you saw how he talks to the people he works with.

That actually goes back to Austen's "Emma", in a way. In the book the father is presented as being deeply flawed, but in a helpless oversolicitous hypochondriac sort of way. Of course these days spoiled hypochondriacs dont claw their way to the top and live in the best parts of Beverly Hills, so the father in this movie had to be presented as deeply flawed, believably successful, and still having a basically healthy relationship with his daughter. I think it worked iverall.
