I don’t know, I like her but I don’t see her as Cher.

The girl who plays Betty in Riverdale would be my choice.

When it comes to making movies about funny women, Tracy Oliver might be Hollywood’s first call. She co-wrote Girls Trip, a movie with as many scenes about the ethics of friendship as there were scenes devoted to getting professionally drunk in New Orleans.

She wrote Little, a riff on Big, in which a teenage Marsai Martin puts on a blazer and effectively talks down to all of the adults around her.

Next she’s doing new versions of First Wives Club (for BET) and Clueless (at Paramount), continuing to pull classic movie conventions into the present.

Oliver, who started out as a performer at Stanford and later acted alongside Issa Rae in Awkward Black Girl, started writing when she wasn’t getting enough of the roles she wanted to play herself.

The decision was also, partly, made on the advice of her mom, who was tired of hearing her complain: “I would be like, ‘Oh, there’s not a lot of roles for women who look like me.’” But when you’re a writer, you can create that role, Oliver says. “You have the power to write it. And the thing about writing is that it’s free. You don’t have to raise money to write. There’s no gatekeeper. There’s no one telling you you can’t do it.”

Oliver makes it seem easy, but the job isn’t without its hurdles. How, exactly, do you remake movies that a generation grew up rewatching — movies you grew up rewatching? And what happens when you don’t get all the control you thought writing would help you regain?

In between projects, Oliver talked to Vulture about paying homage to the iconic “You Don’t Own Me” scene in First Wives Club, the terror that comes with remaking Clueless for today’s teens, and why she doesn’t regret speaking out against that transphobic line in Little.

No. THIS FILM SHOULD NOT BE REMADE. It's too good, it's one of those rare movies where everything just went right. Movies like that can't be remade, the remakes are never anything more than a hollow impersonation.

And no, Moretz wouldn't make a good Cher. She doesn't come across as highly intelligent or sophisticated, and she definitely doesn't come across as a virgin.

The film is special because of Alicia Silverstone, which is just too perfect as Cher. It is an average film or even complete failure without her. I think that would be the most difficult part for re-make. Rachel Blanchard showcased how difficult that was before.

And I agree I don't see Chloe Grace Moretz being able to pull it off, she is more of a mean girl materiel in my opinion.

I think the only one can do this from the top of my hat is Elle Fanning, I think she is the only girl as sweet.

The original won't be duplicated regardless of the casting. They'll still go ahead with it anyway and hope to make a few bucks on name recognition. It will wind up in the bargain bin at Walmart within a year of release and quickly forgotten. That's how these things always go.

Some of you will see that comment and think 'wow, this guy must be a racist'.

Au contraire. These films are clearly lampooning the super-rich and spoiled, so it makes absolutely no sense in a society in which living standards are declining for the working and lower-middle-classes, and where anti-Semitism and racism, and general resentment towards social 'elites', is rising, to provoke ethnic and racial bigotry by once again presenting the haves as Jewish or POC.

It sends out a dangerous narrative that can easily be grasped by bigots to demonise these minority groups.

However, if you make the spoiled rich kids WASPs, like they are in the film White Chicks, you don't risk transferring populist ire towards ethnic and marginalised minorities (society's usual scapegoats). Instead, you're more likely to transfer that resentment towards rich white people.

Unfortunately, Hollywood lives in a bubble, and doesn't realise how the rest of society perceives them. They still believe that society is charmed by their wealth and privileges. That is not true, either for the populist left or the populist right. So, instead of inadvertently encouraging anti-Semitism and racism, it would be best advised to lampoon and mock rich WASPs.
