My Lefty Rosenthal Story

About 15-20 years ago, on a business trip, I had just finished reading Nicholas Pileggi’s Casino as my plane landed in Ft. Lauderdale. I noticed on the back of the paperback it mentioned that Frank Rosenthal owned a restaurant called Croc’s in Boca Raton. That night on a whim a friend and I found the restaurant and went in for dinner. I asked the bartender, half jokingly, if Lefty ever came in. The bartender pointed to a back table and said, “That’s Mr. Rosenthal having dinner with his daughter”. A little while later, after the bartender told him I’d asked for him, Rosenthal came over and introduced himself. I told him I had just finished the book, loved Scorsese’s film and what an honor it was to meet him. Frank Rosenthal then stood at the bar for the next 30 minutes telling us stories about Pileggi, the film and his life since Vegas. (“Bobby was much better looking than me”; “Sharon Stone was a real sweetheart”). He even personally served us our dinner.

Rosenthal had some hardbound copies of Casino behind the bar for sale and I bought one, which he signed for me. Overall, although I found him quite personable, he appeared as an average south Florida retiree. He seemed to enjoy meeting people and the celebrity status that the book and movie provided. Unfortunately, the next time I was in Boca I noticed that Croc’s had closed. I guess the restaurant business turned out to be a bad gamble for Lefty.

You should have asked him who was hotter...Sharon Stone or the "real ginger". I would have asked about Tony spilotro too and frank cullutta

reply

I wouldn't ask a guy like that too many specific questions, let him talk about what he wants to talk about.

'I wouldn't ask a guy like that too many specific questions, let him talk about what he wants to talk about.

Thank you, that's exactly what I did. I didn't want to embarrass him or myself.

reply

Well the people who know deniro always call him Bobby. So least we know you werent bsing

reply

Not asking specifics as much as giving him a Avenue to ramble down

That is an interesting story! I loved the book. It was so engrossing. Lefty Rosenthal had such a fine mind that he would have done great in any legitimate business. But for some reason he loved gambling and he became great at picking the winners.

Lefty's story in the book is very interesting. It talks about how he could never really be in the Mob because he wasn't Italian. But I always pictured him as a Mob type guy from The Sopranos.lol

I saw a documentary on TV and they showed the real guys from the film in their courtroom appearances. It was stunning to see that the real Tony Spilotro looked a lot like Joe Pesci. But the real Frank Rosenthal looked nothing like Robert de Niro. I kept thinking , "This guy looks like an accountant (well he was in a sense) or a college professor. It was hard to believe this soft spoken, benign looking guy was so involved with organized crime. Just an observation that I had.

The message I got from the book it was the consistent winners betting in the bleachers of Wrigley Field that got him so interested in gambling

After Lefty died some FBI documents were made available to the public regarding mob involment in Vegas. They refer to a informant code named 'Achilles'. Although it has not yet been verified, some experts think that this person was Rosenthal.

Creative story but another one with zero proof that it even happened. So many of these stories on this site. No proof, nothing. Most are probably made up.

reply

If it was made up, who cares? Seemed like a pretty innocuous story anyway.

reply

I have no need to prove it's true to you, but if you want proof look under the front seat of your Cadillac.
