What did this and Gladiator have

that Troy, Alexander, King Arthur, Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood and Exodus: Gods and Kings all lacked?

The only (sort of) historical epic that was a success after the year 2000 was 300, and that by sticking to a fairly similar story to Braveheart's.

Braveheart vs Gladiator? Easily Braveheart. Actually, I think of Gladiator as a wannabe Braveheart lol.

The director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven is epic.

reply

Same. I’ve always viewed Gladiator that way. Braveheart for the win.

Are you watching any sword-and-guts TV shows? I'm a big fan of the genre on the small screen. They might not be quite as epic, but The Last Kingdom and Knightfall are really great in their own right.

reply

I don't remember Knightfall?

Is The Last Kingdom the one set in China with the zombies?

reply

Knightfall is about the Knights Templar. Mark Hamill is in season 2 and he *crushes it*.

The Last Kingdom is a Netflix series about Britain and the Vikings. It's based on books (I haven't read them) and it's pretty great.

reply

Oh nice, those sound interesting.

I'll definitely need to check out Knightfall.

Thanks for the recommendation.

A well-written protagonist.

reply

Good writing

reply

They were both fantastic epics.

I can probably sum it up in two scenes, William Wallace's speech before the first epic battle and Maximus throwing his sword into the audience.

Both are some really great film-making.

If you listen to William's last words in this speech he shouts in a loud determined voice - "alba gu bràth!!" which means, 'Scotland forever' in their Gaelic language which I think is only spoken by a few Scots today but it's a term often used when showing support for their native land of Scotland. This is one of the greatest speeches in film history in my view.

Here's the scene...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TME0xubdHQc

Then you have Maximus and his great quote "are you not entertained"? Amazing scene...

Nothing in the other movies (the ones I've seen) come close to these two scenes in BH and Glad.

That being said, I did like Troy and Alexander even though the casting kinda sucked in Alexander, it was still a pretty solid film with some very good acting. Troy was pretty good too. I need to see the extended director's cut for KoH though. I did like the film but it I wasn't wowed by it. However, everyone seems to rave about the extended version.

Anyhow, I haven't seen the others listed...
