When did Val Kilmer's career downfall start?

I guess I'm somewhat concerned about him because he has been looking really sick lately do his issues with throat cancer. But that's another story. It seemed like Batman Forever marked the pinnacle of Val Kilmer's career (or the point in which he was officially A-list if he wasn't already). It seemed like Red Planet in 2000, was Kilmer's last real shot or opportunity at headlining a big budgeted major motion picture.

Personally if one were to point out where Kilmer's downfall began, it would be The Island of Dr. Moreau. It was an awful movie in its own right, but it was Kilmer's off screen antics (such as what happened between him and Joel Schumacher on the Batman Forever set, hence why Kilmer didn't play Batman more than once) at this point that really started costing him roles. During filming he burned one or more screen members with cigarettes, and was often boorish and difficult. You can get away with acting like an ass when your movies do well at the box office, but once they start flopping, no studio is going to put up with that garbage.

Around the mid nineties.

Kilmer has made poor career choices that hardly covered up him being a dick.

Like David Caruso he's blacklisted from Hollywood, he functions in creating dysfunction, it made Forever a really tough set to be on especially where come together as a family and need to take care of each other like Batman and Robin and Alfred who need each other.

Certainly not this with picture.

This was his peak 95-96

After this film.

You can struggle for a few years and find success.

Unfortunately, he never did.

reply

Ever since he left the Batman role I haven't seen anything of quality or interest out of him.

reply

Have you seen The Salton Sea? That’s a good one.

reply

Never heard of it.

He's been in films that nobody talks about like Dr Moreau or Red Planet.

reply

Maybe Red Planet....

but even that was a flop

'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' (2005)

Saw the trailer to that, aside from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang he hasn't been in anything of quality since leaving Batman.

reply

I can very much agree with that, indeed.

We'll always have Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005). With a strong cast of characters brimming with peak Shane Black lines, his Gay Perry was the standout. All the planets aligned on that one, imo.

In the same year I saw Kilmer in a London West End production of 'The Postman Always Rings Twice'. It was a great experience and I thought Kilmer made the transition from screen to stage very well.

Shortly after this movie is the answer.
