Agreed- I just watched this for the first time in about 15-20 years with my 4 year old, there are a lot of Landmark films that i have never seen (Little Mermaid, Star Wars, Indiana Jones) but i've still seen a fair few an Babe has always been a film i have affection for
You have your own Little Ranking list in your head and certain films are a benchmark like Toy Story, and as you get older your tastes expand and you watch darker more challenging and 'important' films but then i've ended up back at Babe again and appreciate it even more now than i did then , it still holds up
Most films try to manipulating the tears out of you but this one is so underplayed i thought it was masterful, as much as it's about Babe i was more drawn to Hogget and following it from his perspective, you get the little backstory of the Dog losing his hearing and messing up the Competition killing Hogget's pride and he sees redemption in the Pig
The last line of the Film again so subtle yet has a massive effect because he only speaks about 12 lines of dialog throughout the whole film, you totally feel it
Very surprised to see such a low score i was always under the impression this was a classic, yes i did pick up this time on the animal cruelty theme running through but like others have said it didn't bother me 90 percent of films have an agenda and they are usually more sly and lets not forget the films with creepy sexually perverse undertones, this one is at least a noble one, didn't bother me at all
The fact this has been underscored makes me like it even more now
Edit- Just looked on Wiki and James Cromwell became vegan after making the film, just thought that was a nice little touch and adds even more weight to that final line, those tears were genuine lol
