I think the main thing that killed it was trying to compete with SNL. It've probably been more successful if they hadn't directly try to steal SNL's audience and made an enemy out of Lorne. Don't get me wrong, I think SNL is a little too into itself and needs to be taken down a notch, but no matter how funny it is a new comedy shouldn't just try to kill a staple. That'd be like if Bob's Burgers tried to directly compete with the Simpsons. May be funnier, but you can't throw yourself in the ring with a legend so soon.
In my opinion they should've have put themselves on Friday nights or Saturday at like 10, long before SNL. Mad gave them a run for their money but it was still a dumb decision. And then as they went on they tried to follow the format even more. Season 14 seemed like a crappy SNL knock off. They started as a competitor, then became an imitator.
That plus the good cast leaving and the newbies not being able to hold a candle to them. Will Sasso, Debra Wilson, Artie Lange, Michael McDonald, Stephnie Weir...absoletuly irreplacable.
