What caused this show to become so bad after being so good?

I didnt even know this show was canceled. But I grew up with Mad TV, when it was GENIOUSLY funny! With Aries Spears and Will Sasso and all those. It held a good run in many seasons, and I liked some of the newer actors too.

But then at one point, it became so pathetic and unfunny. Bobby Lee has to be one of the most boring ass comedians ever. But for some reason he got alot of primetime in the later years. But even before him, it started sucking.

Why?

Why did something so smartly funny become so dumb?

When it became the Bobby Lee show.

I had no clue the show was cancelled, I just realized it wasn't on tv the other day. Maybe that is how bad it got because I use to love the show.

To be honest i thought every season had its decent moments, i think seasons 10 and 13 were the low point for me. But i thought the first half of season 14 actually wasnt that bad could of easily stayed on the air, ive been watching the last few seasons of SNL and you cant tell me they are any better than what MADtv was. Its really only the guest stars that keep SNL afloat, they need to base more sketches around the actual cast members and not focusing so much on the guest stars it doesnt seem right to me.

I think it was because Tina Fey's appearances were killing them on the show. Mad TV also reduced their budget and sets.

AresSpears was a jerk to Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele and seemed racist towards them (KMK and JP are biracial and AS is black) so I don't have a great opinion of him.

I think like SNL at the end of the Chris Farley and Adam Sandler, they show started veering towards personalities like Bobby Lee who were too lowbrow. I also thought Mo Collins and Mike MCDonald seemed kind of juvenille in some respects in terms of humor but they had some good guest stints later on

I stopped watching in 2006 when they hired Johnny Sanchez and Anjelah something and both those comedians were very hacky using a lot of race-card-based humor.

I think the main thing that killed it was trying to compete with SNL. It've probably been more successful if they hadn't directly try to steal SNL's audience and made an enemy out of Lorne. Don't get me wrong, I think SNL is a little too into itself and needs to be taken down a notch, but no matter how funny it is a new comedy shouldn't just try to kill a staple. That'd be like if Bob's Burgers tried to directly compete with the Simpsons. May be funnier, but you can't throw yourself in the ring with a legend so soon.

In my opinion they should've have put themselves on Friday nights or Saturday at like 10, long before SNL. Mad gave them a run for their money but it was still a dumb decision. And then as they went on they tried to follow the format even more. Season 14 seemed like a crappy SNL knock off. They started as a competitor, then became an imitator.

That plus the good cast leaving and the newbies not being able to hold a candle to them. Will Sasso, Debra Wilson, Artie Lange, Michael McDonald, Stephnie Weir...absoletuly irreplacable.

i don't even remember watching MADTV for all the 14 seasons. I most likely stopped watching maybe after 2009?? I remember old reruns would air on comedy central & that's how I would watch the show for a while. And now they don't even air the show---and barely have it anywhere to watch except youtube! kinda sucks :/
