one of the worst sci-fi's ever

seriously what a bad movie. i liked it as a kid the one time i saw it, but watching it agian on netflix it is seriously a godawful mess. the story has such a promising idea but shits the bed the moment they enter the stargate. imagine; they teleport to a fantastical alien world...that's just a normal desert filled with human people. imagine if star wars or e.t. or any other alien movie just had regular people. even then, the rest of the movie is just super cheesy and predictable. it's literally the army fighting egyptian gods with machine guns!!! what the fuck were they smoking. what's next, sylvester stallone having a wrestling match against Zeus? it is about on the same level.

reply

I like the idea of the movie and I get why people like it. Despite it being about aliens, Ancient Egypt, and lots of gunplay, I will admit even I wasn't that big a fan.

reply

There is nothing wrong with the premise of fighting Egyptian gods with machine guns. The premise of ID4, fighting UFOs with Hornets was worse.

reply

advanced aliens are not the same as mythical deities. imagine a movie where the army fights JESUS CHRIST with guns and tanks. It would be hilarious stupid

reply

Any perceived difference between advanced aliens and mythical deities are immaterial in fiction. And Jesus Christ is not a mythical deity.

reply

Sure he is. That you choose to believe in him doesn't somehow make him different from Zeus or Osiris.

reply

You obviously never saw Stargate SG-1, the TV show that vastly expands upon the potential of the Stargates. You DUMB SHIT.

reply

well, you got me there

reply

Yes, this movie truly sucks and Glen Larson should have sued since they copied his ancient Egyptians stuff from Battlestar Galactica 1978.

reply

By that logic, both Larson and the makers of the Stargate movie should be sued by the ancient Egyptians themselves!

reply

It would be better for you to stay silent and thought a fool then to comment and prove you are a damn fool who has no idea what you're talking about.

reply

Do you really hate Stargate because they used ancient Egypt as a model for the ancient aliens, yet you love the ridiculous original Battlestar Galactica (with original repeated footage to cut costs) because the helmets worn by the Viper pilots resemble the fuckin' Sphinx statue in Giza???? That was the most ridiculous aspect of that whole retarded show!!

reply

Haven't we agreed on things in the past? Or am I thinking of someone else?

reply

Was it great? No. But I'm sorry I will strongly disagree with you on this being one of the worst sci-fi's ever. There is a lot of crap in the Sci-fi genre and this doesn't even come close to the bottom of the barrel.

reply

Heh, the entire premise of Stargate was that many thousands of years ago humans were abducted or taken from the earth, and forced to be slaves on other worlds throughout the galaxy, so yeah there will be humans on other worlds.

That said, there are aliens too if you watch SG-1, which is 10 seasons of 'definitely better' than the 1994 movie.

Unfortunately the big weakness of SG-1 is that 9 out of 10 worlds in the show looks like Beautiful British Columbia in Canada.

Better than Classic Doctor who with 9 out of 10 worlds looking like a desolate British quarry.

reply

I'd watch Sylvester Stallone take on Tommy lister.

But only with the Zeus unibrow, haircut, and shoulder pads.

I loved the movie and it paved the way for the multiple shows based on the movie. There wouldn't have been a Stargate show if the movie was horrible. Kurt Russell was in it and he boosts the quality of every movie. James Spader also did a good job. My only complaint about the movie would be Jaye Davidson as the main villain since I don't consider him to be much of an actor.

CGI wasn't as common back in 1994 although Jurassic Park had set the standard the year before. I would consider this to be more of a sci-fi action movie instead of a geeky sci-fi film. Most movies are not very realistic since the hero beats the odds to take out a squad of villains. Instead of being gods, the villains in the film were actually aliens who pretended to be gods.

reply

I never saw the TV show, but the movie is brilliant. The OP's complaints are nonsense. The encountered humans on the other planet because those were humans, who had been brought to the other planet. They weren't fighting actual gods, they were fighting an alien race.
