That being said, would the movie had been good if we knew Andy was tunneling his way out the whole time?

The fact that they kept this from the viewer makes it seem rather manipulative in order to give us a surprise ending. But what if we knew about half-way through the film that he was planning to escape? I think it might have made the movie a little more interesting. Still a great movie either way...

What do you guys think?

I think it worked perfectly the way it was. If we knew he was escaping then the tension of the day of the escape would have been diluted.

Not better. The drama of thinking he hanged himself was really something. I'm glad I didn't nknow.
