So whatever happened to Captain Hadley?

Committed tax evasion, got arrested. Do we know for how long? Where? Would he be housed away from the general prison population due to his status as a former prison guard?

reply

Going by some of the prison youtube channels out there (I’m a sucker for them and I don’t know why), former prison guards going to general population alongside the prisoners they used to guard isn’t uncommon.

reply

Getting arrested and making a deal afterword with saying things to help convict higher up people always happen. I have been to jury duty before and had to wait outside before getting picked because the person decides to make a deal before the trial.

reply

True, but I think the writer wanted us to believe that Hadley would do hard time for murder. He might be able to work a deal and plead out to manslaughter if the prosecutor needed him to, but the warden was already dead. I don't know what kind of deal he could have worked.

reply

The prison and parole board. Area businesses.

reply

There was no mention of tax evasion. He was arrested for assault and murder charges.

reply

He didn't commit tax evasion unless Andy had done so without him knowing which is possible.

Arrested for assault yes but murder not sure how they would get him on that no evidence the only one who could of known blew his own brains out.

I expect other guards to get more lienant sentence themselves would of turned on him for all sorts of other regulation violations

reply

I always assumed at least one or possibly more of the guards would have flipped on Hadley after his arrest for murder. Several of them were shown to be decent guys who wouldn't seem to be the type to defend Hadley once charges were brought. Of course, this is all speculation as far as the film is concerned as Red never said why he was arrested. I haven't read the book so I don't know if they got more specific.

reply

Most likely Captain Hadley became an activist while in prison and fought for the prison reforms that make modern prisons a far less brutal place. He wasn't all bad. He protected Andy from the Sisters, gave the prisoners beer, and gave his wife tens of thousands of dollars.

reply

You make a convincing argument for Capt Hadley's goodness, but Hadley did have what I believe was a distorted idea of what singing a lullaby really was supposed to be.

reply

Pretty sure he ended up feeling like he got fucked by a train.

reply

Why do people always think that Hadley committed tax evasion? He didn’t commit tax evasion. What he did with the money from his brother was perfectly legal.
Norton was the one committing the tax evasion and money laundering crimes. Hadley had nothing to do with that

reply

Furthermore, Norton probably didn't tell Hadley about the money laundering. He most likely kept that between him and Andy.

reply

In reality if Hadley was smart and kept his mouth shut he probably could've walked away free. With the warden dead there was no proof of his murder of Tommy. It was known that Hadley shot the kid because they said he was trying to escape. There would’ve been no other evidence to say otherwise.
