Someone else had this same topic on this same movie discussion which piqued my interest.
I recently revisited the movie because this movie and the original Twister movie I just loved. I watched them both.
The path takes longer if you play it safe. If you traverse the side of a mountain, then no. So dad is not really traveling on foot - all the way. He’s hugging on for dear life on the side of the mountain for much of it. Somehow the dog follows him. A couple of times, he’s sliding down the hill.
But it is a good question. Two things have to happen in this movie. Meryl, her son and the bad guys have to ride the river. They have to hit cat 5 rapids the Gauntlet because this is the whole movie. Dad has to be separate because he’s just really in the way otherwise. And he gets to prove himself, a big sub-plot. But if they told the bad guys and the audience that the river is the fastest way, then it poses a problem if that’s the way dad is not going. So you see him on ledges that no one would normally walk making his own way. He does so because the lives of his family are at stake jeopardizing his own life. After that, it’s really about Maggie. How does she do it? You just have to go along with it.
