Underrated movie, I think.

I'm surprised to see that IMDB users have collectively given this movie a 6.1 rating. I thought the movie was really good. The plot was well-directed, the cast was amazing and therefore the acting was spot on. It was easy to develop a sense of empathy and sympathy for the characters. Very suspensful. And a great ending. The movie is much better than the rating. Anyone feel different? If so, please share.

i agree with you. i was shocked to see it had a 6.1. it most assuredly did not deserve that for all the reasons you already stated

Definitely a good movie, although it bears a significant resemblance to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071401/. Still, it's suspenseful and well worth a watch.

The effects were great as well. Rarely do we see stars perform their own stunts anymore. And these days, it would all be computer-generated effects (fake-looking water, etc.). The early to mid-90's were great for realistic action movies and this one is no exception.

I agree. I love this movie and thought it deserved at least a 7.6

I thought that it was underrated as well. However, I just finished watching it again, its really not that good. Good solid 6 from me.

It's pretty good. I think there was a similar tv movie from the early 90's, but I can't remember the title.

I might be wrong, but I believe you haven't watched enough movies. If you watch many movies, you'll find so much stuff that you like, that you'll start comparing them, to find their right place on the scale. From all the movies you'll find great, one will always be better than the other, maybe only slightly, and therefore the more you watch, the more your rating generosity will decrease. From this perspective, the current 6.2 rating is spot on, and is more or less the rating I would give to this movie. Not a bad rating at all, but reflects the movie as it is: fun, thrilling and exciting, but not as great as something you'd go and recommend everyone to watch it.

I suppose it makes for an adequate diversion if you've got nothing better to do, but that's all. It's far too derivative, predictable, and silly to be called 'underrated'. And the dad is the lamest action hero I've ever seen. He looks like a dandy even while performing such heroically manly tasks as hanging from ledges, outrunning a river, or sending smoke signals to Meryl Streep.

Still, nice scenery. I gave it 4.

Only a 4? Well, to each their own, but I personally would give it a 6. So, it's no mind blowing Academy Award winning film to be sure, but it is a fun and well acted action film. One of my favorite Kevin Bacon films, and sort of forgotten these days, unfortunately. I wish they made more films like this nowadays. Kudos to Meryl Streep for her acting in the film, and doing most of her own stunts. Apparently she almost drowned while performing a stunt, so that makes me respect her acting in this film even more. I gotta rent this movie again. I haven't seen it in a few years. I would recommend this movie to others, for sure.

Calling it underrated is indeed somewhat silly, and so was the smoke signal you mentioned. Wade and his partner could have noticed it too, and that would have caused big trouble...maybe the best thing to do in this case is to run for help. They might have been at the middle of nowhere at that point, but it still would be the first human reaction. Sadly, Hollywood's writing skill many times puts the characters in situations where they can't do anything else but make dull decisions in order to keep the movie watchable.
