What was Roger Ebert thinking...

...when he voted this the absolute worse film of '94?!! He uses the word "hated" over and over in his review. It's a children's film for crying out loud! I really don't find anything offensive about it. If I had kids, I'd much rather they watch this than a lot of other trash out there. Of course, he calls the vile, repulsive "Natural Born Killers" which came out the same year a "masterpiece."

reply

natural born killers is vile trash huh?

reply

No, but it wasn't a good movie. It was overly pretentious and irritating. Perhaps that was Stone's intention... if so, he succeeded. But that still doesn't make it a good movie.

reply

Pretentious? How?

reply

Perhaps that was Stone's intention

Stone as in Oliver Stone? Rob Reiner directed this movie!

Ah yes I see, on the board for the movie North.

You felt it wasn't a good movie, which is fine. Others, myself included, really liked NBK. Most that don't like it start with the violence issue. Yes it's a violent film. The trailers for it showed as much. And it's a movie about SERIAL KILLERS. Gee go figured NBK might....just might be violent movie and not a family film.

As for North, I could care less what Siskell or Ebert or any other reviewer said. I liked it. I don't need a paid reviewer to tell me what to watch. "The Piano" got fantastic reviews and I personally found it to be excrutiating to even finish it. So each to his own....

Amen danimal97520 (see my reply to the OP).

I personally didn't like 'The English Patient' and get a lot of people who did like it suggesting that my intellect is low. Perhaps that's true, but there is the other thought that what appeals to one person doesn't necessarily appeal to another, and their intelligence is not neccessarily a determinant factor

Just because a movie is intended for kids doesnt mean in any way that someone should lower their standards and enjoy it. And obviously, if you've ever even seen Natural Born Killers, you misunderstood the entire movie. Either way, who cares if he hated this? It doesnt effect you or your life in any way. It just gives you a reason to complain.

I just watched the movie last night and I personally enjoyed it quite a lot. I didn't care for Elijah's using strong language in a kid's film (because that might inspire other kids to do it) but otherwise I really don't see what was so unlikeable about the film.

>I didn't care for Elijah's using strong language in a kid's film (because that
>might inspire other kids to do it)

Here's a news flash for you: most kids already know harsh language. They usually learn in from their parents (despite their parents' best intentions). And the scary thing is that they'll eventually learn it anyway. Oh no!

I'd be more worried about kids being inspired to jump off of tall buildings (or at least the roof) using a towel for a parachute. I can see that causing a little more grief.

reply

When I was a kid, I cursed A LOT more than I do now. But that's off the subject:

I love Roger Ebert's reviews. I haven't seen this movie, but he is totally objective about kids movies. Movies like Toy Story and Finding Nemo both got great reviews by him.

I think the poster was referring to Natural Born Killers. I could be wrong, though.

You are truly insane.

Instead of telling others to get a sense of humor, you should follow your own advice and learn a few things about comedy and such, because this movie is so painfully unfunny, I feel I'm wasting my time even talking to you about it!

What does "prancing around" have to do with being gay? Grow up.

Remember it is a comedy, and they are often panned by the movie critcis, no mattter how much people like it. I guess Roger Ebert never saw a film before this, that he really hated, he gave the movie zero stars. I can't think of too many comedy movies that got good reviews from the movie critics. And remember Natural Born Killers is not for kids, and nor it will ever be, and I bet he will recommend parents to let kids watch Lion King way over and even times then North. I myself, and not seen this movie, and I shouldn't, this this is one of the films that you just have to listen to the movie critics about.

reply

*shrug* I totally agree w/ Ebert. North is the absolute worst movie I've ever seen. Just because it's a kid's movie doesn't mean it has an excuse to suck. In fact, if anything, it has LESS of an excuse to suck.

reply

Ebert's rating indicates whether a film met his expectations. It is not an absolute scale. So, if he had low expectations for a film and was pleasantly surprised he would give it a thumb up. He admitted that much on his show.

reply

I can agree with his hating this movie. I only use the word "movie" to denote pictures that I hated.
