Betty is not so much an innocent victim as some make her out to be.
So say you.
This role in the hands of a lesser actress, may well have been the kind of caricature you describe. But Jeannie Drynan did a marvellous job of bringing Betty's pathetic (and I don't mean that in a derogatory sense) vulnerabilities to the forefront. How anyone could
not be moved by this poor woman's plight is astounding to me.
Betty was sensitive but she wasn't too bright. She may have been aware on some level that what Bill was doing was dodgy (although I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't fully understand what was really going on), but this is the only life she'd ever known and she was so down-trodden, that she just accepted it. His word was law.
We look at that sort of thing these days and sneer at a woman who lets her 'man' treat her so, and who obligingly hands over her life and personal power to him - a man who seems to know what's best. We've all become so 'empowered' *gag*, but in reality there
are women out there (perhaps those of a different generation) who are unsure of themselves and who think their husband should rule the roost.
Betty parrots what Bill says without thinking really, he's been her lord and master for so long, she doesn't know how to think for herself.
Her acceptance of Bill's behaviour is not so much an enthusiasm to turn a blind eye to his morally dubious activities, but more a naive acceptance that he knows what's best for the family - she's not evil or behaving out of a desire to do bad things to inflate her ego, or further her career (as it is with Bill).
This 'lifestyle' you speak about? What lifestyle? You saw the hole they lived in, the clothes they wore. She was just desperate because she was losing the only man (and protector) in her life. She probably really loved the crumb. She didn't have the core strength to stand on her own - how could she when she'd been belittled and treated like dirt all her married life?
...thus becomes enraged
That's not rage. It's despair.
