Which sister do you prefer?
My question.
shareBeth definately. Meg really annoys me, more than Amy. Not that I've read the book, it just seemed like she was just as selfish with a desire to be feminine, so it doesn't count.
shareMaybe it was because I first saw Elizabeth Taylor in the part, but I've always liked Amy best, followed by Meg. I also like Mary better than Laura in Little House, too. Meg has a sweetness about her that Jo lacks, and I really understand how Meg was tempted at the engagement party. I was a little annoyed at Laurie for telling her off when it was obvious that she would go back to her old life the next day.
Amy turned out to be a good companion to Aunt March and really put Laurie in his place, setting him back on the straight and narrow.

I think Laurie knew that Meg at that point was very tempted by that lifestyle. Like Amy later in Europe, Meg wanted to be one of the popular girls who had money and flirted and threw caution to the wind and was liked by all the boys. It may be just having fun, but the reason Laurie takes her to task is that it went against the principles the Marches lived by and what they had taught her. I don't think the Marches were complete tee-totallers, but they certainly didn't approve of drinking too much alcohol, especially for teenagers, as Meg still was. The Marches also didn't approve of the low-cut style of dress, the tight lacing to show off the waist (as well as the way tight-lacing kept women "delicate" as they were so short of breath they were nearly always on the verge of fainting, and the multitude of other physical complaints that came from it and how women couldn't do much work because their corsets so tight). And finally, they especially didn't approve of teenagers flirting and carrying on, as Meg was doing.
Come, we must press against the tide of naughtiness. Mind your step.
I think, though, that Meg would soon have realized, after the glow was over, that it really wasn't for her. Besides, she couldn't afford that lifestyle. And I think by this time she was also in love with John Brooke. Laurie meant well, obviously, but I just think he could have allowed her to think it through for herself.

I do agree that Meg would have eventually realized it wasn't for her and that Laurie was a little too severe with her. But sometimes in the early stages of being caught up in something new and exciting, you aren't thinking things through, and allow yourself to do some dumb things you wouldn't ordinarily do...at times like that, it can be nice to have a friend around who tells you the truth if you're being an idiot.

The double standard is pretty noticeable. Meg however had learned her lesson and became a good woman while Laurie had to learn the hard way, but he was even acting that way early in the second half of Little Women. He was showing some signs of being a little bit wild but still a kind-hearted person.
shareJo, of course because we are let into her life the most. We can't help but be partial to her as she's the main character.
Truthfully, I'm the most similar to Amy in looks and personality. I saw Amy as someone who knew what she wanted in life and went after it. No, she wasn't as sweet as Beth or as responsible as Meg, but she did have her own strengths. I think Amy gets too much criticism. They all had their good and bad qualities.
Beth,
shareTo be honest, I think all of the Sisters had their faults and strengths. I am on the fence because although I am more like Jo I have to admit that I liked reading about Amy because not only did she have major flaws but she became a great woman in the end. I also liked reading about Meg, I grew up reading Little Women, it became a comfort to me and it seems that as I am older many aspects of this book are becoming a part of my own life. I am engaged now and living with my fiance and he and I went through a situation like Meg did with John in the book. For instance, when they married, they had a situation where Meg cheerfully told John that he may be welcome to bring friends at any time. Unfortunately when he DID bring his friend, that was the day that Meg had decided to make jam and it was a mess (sadly I think Meg was overlooked in the 1993' version) I laughed while reading that recently because I had the exact same thing happen to me in my own little household ( it was a cake..stupid me wanted to try something from scratch)

I read the book before the watching the movie and Jo & Beth were my favorite. Maybe because they had such a tight bond.
From the book Beth was my favorite and Jo was second. I think the movie failed her characted a bit, she was one courageous girl.
I also liked Meg a lot.
Amy, I liked her better in the book, the movie really makes me want to reach out and slap her good.

Dixon & Prue should get it on.
i think jo, and beth. i kind of want to hit amy for half the movie.
nothing invokes speculation more than the sight of a woman enjoying herself-little women
I like all of them in the book. Though I think Amy was maybe my favorite. I don't think they did that great a job of any of them in the movie. It's making people see the characters as they weren't in the book.

I have always liked Jo the best, and then Meg...Meg is a much more rounded charecter in the book than she is in the movie....you see a lot more of the struggle that Meg has with marriage and motherhood...and also much more of John Brooke as a person...so that if you read Little Men...better stop now...just go read the books if you havent
It is not our abilities that show who we truly are...it is our choices

Amy. I dont have any good reason for that, I just found here to be the most interesting character. And I just love how she ends up with Laurie in the end.. :)
