I find the whole premise of this movie ridiculous

MASSIVE SPOILERS ALERT!!!!

3 brothers falling in love with same woman and marry her in succession, but then she was no good 5-timer who first went for Sam, then Tristan, then Sam, then Tristan, then Alfred, then Tristan again and then killed herself. On top of that, Tristan just disappeared suddenly and gave her nothing but tears and sadness, but then she got married to a rich and powerful Alfred who adored her but yet she went back to Tristan for more hurt and suffering? Oh... and Tristan committed another incestuous relationship by marrying Isabelle, and after Isabelle's father saw what Tristan did to Susanah and still allowed the marriage? Come on!

All valid points. I think its cause sazanna and isabelle 2 were the only chicks in the mountains.

It is a ridiculous premise though. I am still deciding if I want to watch it. Great reviews. Is Julia Ormand that incredible that all 3 want her? I guess I will soon find out. Sounds kind of whorish of her though but I am sure she does it with class.

Yeah, it was ridiculous and overly dramatic. The characters weren't really that multi-dimensional because it just moves from one unfortunate event to another. I think it could've been a lot better if it was a longer movie that focused more on deeper character development. All the development was pretty superficial (kind of like a soap opera). The story was severely truncated for the subject matter they were trying to tackle. Needed to be at least 3 hours.

It is ridiculous, I agree with the OP. It's basically just about a bunch of suffering and nothing good happens. Not that all movies have to have happy goings on but in the end I wonder what the point was of any of it. A family is miserable for years and years, largely and inexplicably over some broad who doesn't seem to be worthy of the destruction of an entire family by any means, and then death death death. I'm not sure what is to be gained or learned from this movie.

Dick, I am VERY disappointed.

Hahaha! I just watched the film and im lost for words i have no idea what to make of it. but i think i agree with you. Im surprised the father didn’t fire into susanah too since all his sons had a turn with her at some point! Especially as his own wife pretty much left him and for a time it was basically just him and S in the house alone haha!

I think thats the only thing missing that would have made this film as unintentionally hilarious as karate kid 3!

I don't think the movie is about Susannah. It is about Tristan and how everyone is attracted to him and then dashed upon the rocks. He is not intentionally harming others but they love him and they are eventually harmed. She is just one more person drawn to him. This is not a romantic love story.

reply

I just can't relate to anyone who doesn't see this movie for the perfection that it is. You'll enjoy it more if you stop over analyzing things.

Jim Harrison? Sorry but that man is awful. You need to read his books. He had the chance to create an epic love story based in Montana yet he makes a legend out of a man who would be hated by society. Very contradictory characters created and so unrealistic.

reply

...."and yet he makes a legend out of a man who would be hated by society."
That sounds pretty damn interesting to me. An "epic love story"?? Psh, really? Because, you know, that hasn't been done completely to death a million times over. Making a legend out of a man who would be hated by society sounds refreshing to me.

reply

Refreshing? LOL the love stories haven't been done to death. They promoted an awful character. You do know stories effect people? Teach them things? This just taught absolutely nothing.
What IS interesting is movies portraying realistic love and then putting an amazing story with it. Like braveheart, last of the mohicans, notebook, titanic even. The love should be coupled with an interesting story. If the man is hated by society for doing actual good which they can't see, fine. But this was a shambles. A river runs through it was much more interesting and had a good story coupled with love. Much more realistic. And they did not make a hero out of bad characters. They showed realistic personalities and a story people could find real. And it taught lessons ;)

Yes, I always saw the "all three brothers falling for the same woman" as a bit absurd. However, it was probably because she was the only woman around.

How did Tristan commit an incestuous relationship by marrying Isabel Two? She wasn't related to him.

Alfred even said to Susannah "how can Decker have allowed it?" And Susannah replies "maybe he is thinking of his daughter's happiness".
