I got the impression the dog was Matt's mother reincarnated. Lassie knew things about Matt's mother. She showed him all these different things that only his mother could've known about. I also noticed the dog was attached to him right away. Lassie brought Matt to the tree with his mother's initials carved in and Lassie showed him where his mother's diary was.

Whoa. That's really interesting, but I doubt what they intended. I had wondered if Lassie was somehow some kind of super-dog, living beyond a natural lifespan and knowing Matt's mom in the past.

Humans do not reincarnate as animals so it is not possible.
