I can't imagine that place was considered stylish or high class in 1994. It looked like some sort of '80s DISASTERPIECE!

I think the intent was to point to how low and crass her character was by showcasing the kind of bad taste that is stereotypical of people who never had money suddenly getting a lot of it: they mistake flashy and gaudy for high class. So Muriel decorates her apartment with garish furniture and artwork because she wrongly thinks that shows sophistication.

Money doesn't buy class as they say.
Muriel had zero class or taste in poverty so she would hardly have any with money. She was also a beautician or whatever and those women really tend to have crass taste in everything.
