The homeless guy whining about the soup.

That part always annoyed me a bit. The guy is getting a FREE bowl of soup, and instead of being quiet and enjoying it....he claims there isn't enough basil?!

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

i think it was the reporter guy/narrator who was pretending to be a homeless guy. i think he was testing her to see how giving she is

reply

No the narrator/reporter was a black man. The homeless guy that whined was a white man, if I remember right.
The reporter shows up after hours when Yvonne and Charlie are there, and they open it for him.
The one who complained was when Yvonne first becomes boss of her restaurant.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

reply

Oh, it is a different homeless guy. There are so many of them around. Know why? Because the rich jerks can't make any money off of them.

reply

The intent of that scene was to show how sweet Yvonne is. When the guy didn't like his free soup, she went back and fixed it, just like she would for any other customer.

As far as the complaining ... I don't know. He's there and he's being waited on, so why not get it how he likes it? Kind of like going to somebody's house and asking them to pass the salt.

I don't know if I've lived 10,000 days, or one day 10,000 times...

reply

So the scene operate on the assumption that as a homeless man he should be happy with what he's getting and ashamed in asking for more. You know cause he's no good unproductive member of society and his meals should come from the dumpster.

reply

Because he wasn't paying for it, it was free and he wasn't exactly asking to pass the salt.
But the homeless man could have been excused for it if he wasn't in his right mind and complained about the basil like a child would to which Yvonne responded with kindness.

reply

Actually, some of the poorest people are the most particular and high maintenance people I've ever met. It's actually better off people who are more live and let live about things. But even so, he was just asking for more seasoning. It isn't like he got the soup and said "What? No chicken noodle today?"

Poor people have pride too, and for a lot of them, it may be hard to come and sit at a table where everyone can see that you're the guy who is too poor to pay for his meal. Yvonne said she had the certain table named after Charlie and it was right up front, so I assume that the only ppl that sat at that table were getting free meals and the homeless that came in weren't just sitting anywhere and blending in.

That being said, for a homeless person to go in, they were probably needy enough to suck up their pride a bit and if they're gonna do that, they may as well do it right and get their soup exactly how they like it. Maybe having the authority to complain about the meal makes them feel a bit more important and gives them back a tiny bit of the pride they've lost.

Very true. I used to volunteer at a soup kitchen, and I couldn't believe how obnoxious and entitled some of the people were there. Many of them were polite and said "thank you," but others were just the opposite. One woman even threw a fit because she said I didn't give her as much food as the other people in line (which was not true), and then refused to budge from her spot in line until she got more, holding up everyone behind her in line.

"I can't believe you like money too. We should hang out."

reply

What I don't understand is why anyone would expect any particular group of people to behave in a different manner just because of the make-up of the group. You can take a group of vastly wealthy people and another group of those living in abject poverty and both groups will have polite members and obnoxious and entitled members. People are people and the different personality types will be present in every grouping.

I got the impression that he was not so much complaining about the soup as offering advice on how it should taste. She asked for his opinion and he thought about it before offering critique. There was nothing mean spirited or petty about his reply. The way the scene was played is not deserving of the derogatory term whining. This tells more about the prejudices of those replying to this thread than it does to describe the scene.

I don't believe I said anything prejudiced, & I don't believe the term 'prejudice' even applies here.
Its called courtesy, and gratitude. The man was getting a free bowl of soup, and a clean, warm free place to eat it. NO ONE, homeless or not, rich or not, is entitled to that.
Its a privilege in this circumstance, not a right.

I am close to poor myself, and if I were given a free meal by a nice person I'd just say "Thank you."

I think he was just giving an honest answer, and not being a whiner. She asked him and he responded about it. If she hadn't, he wouldn't have said anything about it.

reply

Yes, and my guess is that that scene was included to show how Yvonne is respectful of others' opinions, even a homeless guy. Not that homeless people deserve less respect, but the society normally ignore and shun them.

reply

I got the impression it was more to get a second bowl of soup. Like if you don't like something and they bring back a new plate of it?

reply

One day a homeless guy approached me and begged for money. I refused but bought him a couple of slices of pizza as he said he wanted to buy food (ha ha). He wasn't grateful and still asked for money for breakfast!

That was the last time I would ever give money or do anything for the homeless.
