In fact, if there was no smoking in the film, I would probably come this this board and ask 'how come nobody smokes in the film?'
On the whole, smoking in films didn't really start becoming taboo until after about 2000, anyway.

Actually, if you compare this to movies from that era, The Hudsucker Proxy doesn't have all that much smoking.
