ARE YOU KIDDING ME--THIS MOVIE SUCKS

MODERN BLAXPLOITATION

This has to be one of the worst written movies i've ever seen. I am highly insulted by the ridiculous/fake dialogue. These people are supposed to be in New York. The sad attempt at 'ghetto slang,' and so-called realistic portrayal of 'life on the streets' makes my stomach turn. I am from the Bronx. Most oy family is from NYC. And my childhood/adolescence took part in the Bronx the early 90s. As a black person I am offended. This movie is a prime example of why movies like 'Hollywood Shuffle' were created--to exploit offensive movies like this. THAT IS NOT THE REAL "HOOD." BLACK PEOPLE DO NOT ACT AND TALK LIKE THAT. IT IS NOT NORMAL OR 'REAL' FOR PEOPLE TO SHOOT EACH OTHER OVER A BASKETBALL GAME IN BROAD DAYLIGHT WITH CHILDREN AROUND, OR FOR 12 YEAR OLDS TO PARTICIPATE IN DOG FIGHTS. I'm so tired of movies trying to normalize this type of sick behavior. this is where stereotypes come from. And if you believe the lifestyles presented in this movie are realistic scenarios, you're an idiot. GET OVER IT.

and by the way, the plot sucked. I'd have to write another post to address that (i.e. dangerous crack dealers trusting a child with all their information)...

OH AND THAT LIL SPANISH KID--"She be likin you Homes...I'm kickin the stupid dope moves"?!? what the heck?!? are they in fake south central or fake new york? No one talks like that. seriously, homes.

Uh, people did talk using heavy slang (I've been around numerous people who've annoyed me with it) and people still do. Unfortunately, there are some crazy people that would shoot a child over a basketball game and there are children who participate in many things that you wouldn't expect them to. It might be just me, but it seems like you haven't tooken a good look at the real world.

This movie doesn't perfectly tell your life story, and maybe since you don't know how to imagine which appreciative movie watchers can, and it's obvious you can't so you can't see the point the writers were trying to get across.

This movie is much more than just about drugs, abnormally mature children and crazy people. It's an attempt to aim out to some of those who have seen that crazy killer, who've known that "slang-obsessed" spanish kid and have been around dog fights when they should've been studying out of a text book. Let your imagination rise, maybe you won't criticize great movies again.

It amazes me how people who grew up in big cities feel like they know every lifestyle that exist inside that city. Just because you are a black person who grew up in the Bronx does not mean you have the inside track on what life is like "in the streets". It does not mean you know the life of people inside the drug trade. I am sure the Bronx is big enough to encompass all types of lifestyles and one could live all their life there and not be knowledgable of every aspect of the Bronx.
I have lived in the same city for 28 years and some of the things I just hear about that go on in this city still amaze me. So do not claim you know every lifestyle of the Bronx just because you live in the Bronx.

Really? Perhaps you should read these real life stories...

A person being shot over a basketball game can happen. It's definitely realistic.

Also, remember, this wasn't a documentary. It's a movie. It's entertainment.

I mean, maybe guys don't go berzerk and shoot kids on a playground over a hoops game everyday. But, aren't movies about stuff that you don't see happening every day? Aren't extraordinary and/or unusual sitations what make movies entertaining in the first place?

I thought it was a good movie because it was a good story.

But yeah, that little spanish kid was annoying as hell. That may have been the first time I was ever happy when a little kid got killed in a movie! haha

I think they were being sarcastic.

There are lots of punk-ass adolescent kids who sound that ridiculously fake in real life. And they get much the same reaction from older people that Chuckie got. (Esteban's "You got what?" is one of the best lines in the film.)

maybe its because im watching the movie on BET...but yea it really doesn't seem that good.....imma blame most of it on BET for some reason doing soo much more editing than they usually do....but that hispanic kid is way to *beep* annoying i literally can't understand what he's saying most of the time

These crabcakes are good as a mug!! I f@$%ks with these crabcakes!!! -ann coulter via the boondocks

I never lived in ny so i wouldn't know how real it is or not.

sh*t happens when juveniles hav guns. and Unfortunateley most of these movies are portrayed by minorities

reply

OP,

I live in Philly and worked for the prison system for a long time. It's routine that someone's shooting another person because they stepped on their foot or showed some minor "disrespect" and we have hundreds of murders per year and thousands of nonfatal injuries. That's because black people, and some hispanic people, have no education, barely grade school, and have no coping mechanisms to deal with stress. Add, no money, and you have people clinging to weak ideas of self-importance and they can be easily set off.

I saw this movie when it first came out and it's still pretty clear in my mind because it was so good. But, the film is really about the boy playing a real life chess game with people, so there is an element of fantasy to it.

I think "Fresh" is a pretty good movie, but it's clear that the writer/director is a white man, and a lot of things about it just don't ring true. What was up with that guy on the basketball court who over-annunciated every word? ("I am going to smoke him!")

No it's not. It's not even a hood movie. It's a fantastic modern drama. And for your information people did used to say stupid dope moves. I don't know what they say now. Whatever Gucci Mane says.

reply

Exactly. Ppl have to take into account when this movie was made. Take into further account the script premise was written for a few years earlier than that. You got away with a lot more back then than now. Ppl spoke like that and sht like that happened. Ppl would say the movie South Central was whack if they watched it now, and probably wouldn't know how big British Knights were when referenced in the film. Different time.

Lastly, I think it's important that you should know that you have just read my signature.
