ARE YOU KIDDING ME--THIS MOVIE SUCKS

MODERN BLAXPLOITATION

This has to be one of the worst written movies i've ever seen. I am highly insulted by the ridiculous/fake dialogue. These people are supposed to be in New York. The sad attempt at 'ghetto slang,' and so-called realistic portrayal of 'life on the streets' makes my stomach turn. I am from the Bronx. Most oy family is from NYC. And my childhood/adolescence took part in the Bronx the early 90s. As a black person I am offended. This movie is a prime example of why movies like 'Hollywood Shuffle' were created--to exploit offensive movies like this. THAT IS NOT THE REAL "HOOD." BLACK PEOPLE DO NOT ACT AND TALK LIKE THAT. IT IS NOT NORMAL OR 'REAL' FOR PEOPLE TO SHOOT EACH OTHER OVER A BASKETBALL GAME IN BROAD DAYLIGHT WITH CHILDREN AROUND, OR FOR 12 YEAR OLDS TO PARTICIPATE IN DOG FIGHTS. I'm so tired of movies trying to normalize this type of sick behavior. this is where stereotypes come from. And if you believe the lifestyles presented in this movie are realistic scenarios, you're an idiot. GET OVER IT.

and by the way, the plot sucked. I'd have to write another post to address that (i.e. dangerous crack dealers trusting a child with all their information)...

OH AND THAT LIL SPANISH KID--"She be likin you Homes...I'm kickin the stupid dope moves"?!? what the heck?!? are they in fake south central or fake new york? No one talks like that. seriously, homes.

I'm sorry that this one seemed to be over your head. You should obviously stick to movies like Rush Hour!

reply

lol at rush hour recommendation

reply

damn you killed him with that rush hour part, he is stupid though there is countless times where people have been shot at basketball games in daylight and yes fool people do and did talk like that

Charlie Kelly: When was the last time we played night crawlers together Frank?

reply

Yeah,I'm from NY also (Queens)and some parts of the movie were not realistic,I agree with you. But it was a pretty good movie,IMHO. But I DEFINATELY can see where you're coming from. It seems like as Black people there is a love/hate relationship in this country. ESPECIALLY when it comes down to movies. It's like if we have a gangter type movie (like The Godfather,Scarface,Boondock Saints)it can't be simple escapism. It's REALITY. We ACTUALLY live that way. Every...last...Black person. Case in point, there's an idiot on this very board that said this movie 'made' him racist against Black people. WTF???? Did the Godfather 'make' you hate Italians? So I can understand the point you're making. BTW, what part of the BX are you from? I'm Black/Panamanian and I used to hang out on E.Tremont with my Panapeeps! Lol! Peace!!

reply

how does boondock saints and godfather make everything that concrete lol?? and i dont remember any black people in those movies thank god lol

I liked the movie but some parts were REALLY difficult and painful to watch. At the very least, I will say I give strong credit to then 12-year old Sean Nelson for taking on such a gritty, complex role. He played his part and so did the always-excellent Giancarlo Esposito. They were both cold-blooded!

Your right, if the vocab isn't what is actually used in your neighborhood of the Bronx then it's blaxploitation. lol. Most of the cast was NYC born and raised, as well as the director, but if you don't believe that is how anyone talks so be it.
I live in San Bernardino, CA and a 14 year old was shot while playing basketball well before dusk because he was wearing the wrong colors. In NYC, LA, Chicago, detroit, and Oakland there have been incidents where people were killed for their sneakers, so didn't give me any BS about shots aren't fired around children in dayligh over something insignificant.
The film does not normalize this behavior- it's probably the most shocking scene in the film. At no point do you expect it to happen, nor do any of the other characters mention he shouldn't be showing up the other guy. The film does not glamorize drug dealers and pushers.

As for the plot- they didn't give him any excessive "inside information", he was running the drugs and set it up, and either way that point is valueless because the movie is about chess, and uses the characters to illustrate a chess game through a drama.

The previous post has a point on the date and timing of the movie, along with its location, the sense of time period and environment is absent. These are fundamental details that give movies more energy.

I hate to correct anyone but while there are more pawn shops were it is easier for impoverished people to buy and sell guns, it is a fact that the people in America that have the most guns live in white upscale suburban neighborhoods. White kids in the midwest and down south have more access to assault rifles and high powered machine guns.

seriously man. stuff like this continues to happen to this day. people have shot each other over video game systems. and like it was mentioned before, basketball court shootings have happened plenty, and yes, people have been shot over trivial things like sneakers. they may be far from the every day, or every week occurance, but it's real, and it happens. you might think it's so ridiculously stupid that nobody could do it. but you haven't met the truely, ridiculously stupid.

reply

It's a movie. But I bust stupid fresh moves like that kid ALL DAY. Respect. That sh-- is REAL.

reply

It might not reflect your life, but it probably does reflect the lives of a lot of people in the ghetto. Just because you're black doesn't mean you know everything about every other black person's situation.
