Tears?

I just watched Fresh for probably the fourth or fifth time last night, and when I got to the end of the movie, the ending struck me as having a new meaning. For whatever reason, it seemed like the purpose of Fresh crying was to throw his father off of his game. The idea seemed absurd at first, but then I noticed how much his father seemed to hurt emotionally from the sight of seeing his son break down like he did. Sam's usual game time confidence appeared to be at best slightly rattled. After watching Fresh tell lies with such stone cold conviction in regard to Esteban and his other drug dealing associates, it makes you wonder if Fresh is able to be so coldly manipulative when playing against his own father. In this scene Sam makes a reference to Fresh having to let go of his childish games. It would be sort of ironic if Fresh used a "childish" trick to defeat his father. And while the movie never actually shows Fresh beating his father, it is generally assumed that he does indeed triumph over him. I guess I'm just wondering if Fresh had learned to put the game on speed and chew up his father on his own terms.

I'm looking for the master.

Ain't no masters here dude... Ain't no slaves either!

I think the tears simply was to bring us back to the fact that he was still a child. Even though Fresh has skills that put the kid from Home Alone to shame he is still just a kid trying to survive the Urban Jungle. He could never show weakness in front of others because it could get him killed. He had to put on a strong front and be calculating every step of the way. At that point when he was safe and with his father he finally broke down and let his feelings come out.

Fresh was always been underestimated and he surprised adults when he challenged them with full intelligence. He looked down the barrel and overcame it. He saved his sister because he loved her. He knew his father loved him but his Father did not show it or provide. His father trained him to think like an adult and engage in mental wars with other. His father did not know how much Fresh learned.

When they sit down to play in the final scene, Fresh has overcome the streets, cops, his sister etc. There is no more challenges....except his father. I believe he cried because his father was next one his list of opponents to defeat...but he did not want to take him on. Because he would destroy him.

Those were not sad tears, those were tears of a determined man, trying not to destroy his father for making him do the things for his family that his father should have done. The father is recognizing in his sons tears that this in now a man. the lesson are over and he had better respect him like he has never respected anyone before.

(The dog scene is not needed...I love dogs)
