It was the toughest scene for me to watch as a youth, I did not really understand it at the point either.
Who knows if the dog would have eventually been killed if let loose.
If that happened realistically, the dog is a killer-dog things were gonna get ugly at some point, wether he would have attacked a random dog in the street or a kid once they are taught to kill like he was it's not gonna go out of their system. So letting him lose would be heck of a lot sicker than killing him.
Also he didn't have any way to take care of it. He clearly was never allowed by his auntie to have it at his place before hardly gonna have after, plus too many risk with all those kids around plus auntie.
And was he to give it away and hope that the things the dog had learnt about killing would magically be a non issue? No realistically speaking the only thing he could have done was have it put down... Which he did, he just didn't go to the vet to do it.
