Why did Carrie come out on top in this movie?

Throughout most of the movie she seemed like she was toying with him. He liked her and told her he loved her (sort of) but she chose to marry the rich guy. Then she shows up to his wedding and tells him she's seperated? She couldn't choose another time to tell him? I don't know how she could have come out as a good character or someone to root for. I was rooting for Fiona, even though we never got to see what kind of relationship they had. They had more of a relationsip than Carrie and Charles did. Now I can see why this was listed under the worst romantic movies of all time (The journalist listed Carrie as the sole reason for this).

I give this movie a 5/10. All of the other characters were great and the bits with the friends were funny, but since it mostly involved his finding and catching Carrie, it ruined a good half of the movie. Had the charcter been rewritten and played by someone more endearing it probably would have worked. Although can a character who isn't likeable be made likeable on the sole effort of the actor? It's been done before but Andie MacDowell isn't exactly at the top of the "greatest actors of our time" lsit, so I can see how it could not have been done by her.

I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me.

No idea! Carrie's character is not appealing at all. Not that funny, or even interesting. Her character is just plain flat, all style and no substance. If I were Charles, I would have picked Fiona. The way Andie delivered Carrie's lines, especially the last one, came off as totally forced and awkward. I wonder if she had been played by another actress if the character would have come off differently, but probably not. Both Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock had better chemistry with Grant in the movies they made with him.

On the more shallow side, Andie McDowell's a beautiful woman, but with that haircut she looks ridiculous.

No, at least not if the writer and the director got the performance that they wanted. Can you imagine "always on time and usually early" Fiona and "always late" Charles trying to go anywhere? I like Fiona, but there is nothing warm about her. Carrie is a very warm person.

Whether Carrie was played the way she was supposed to be or not, it doesn't matter she is still not likable. She is just boring. Fiona was way more interesting. I think that Andie and Hugh didn't have much chemistry. I liked Andie better with someone like Bill Murray in Groundhog day. I just can't see why Charles would be so into Carrie. It makes no sense.

That is your perception; I think she is wonderful.
She is just boring.
I don't find her at all boring, at least not more boring than Charles is. They seem to be quite suited for each other.
Fiona was way more interesting.
You want an "interesting" wife?  I don't think that Charles wants that kind of drama in his life. Do you?It certainly would've been interesting to watch always on time Fiona — actually she's probably usually early since she allows plenty of time for accidents — going someplace with always late Charles.Fiona wonders if she would hate Tom so much if he were not her brother. Charles is a lot like Tom.Do you want to live in "interesting" times?

I would marry her in a minute. There is something very homey about her which you don't normally find in beautiful women. It all depends on what you want. Charles is basically a homebody — he settles in quite nicely with Scarlett — he is just afraid of making the commitment. You want a more exciting wife? Good for you.
