West coast hip hop on a New York movie?

so i watched it the other day, and i noticed majority of the music was from the death row artist at the time.

but its all west coast style music, idk was the sound track on deathrow records?

but id expect a movie like this to have NaS,Mobb Deep,Jay-z..that east coast music.

West Coast music is more fitting for a basketball movie, plus as they said above WC was the *beep* back then in 1993 when this was filmed. Snoop had just dropped Doggystyle, Kurupt was hot and in the east only Wu Tang was coming up at the time. Biggie, Nas, Jigga, Mobb Deep wouldn't drop their deput albums for at least 1-2 years.

At the time of this film's release, 2pac was still an East Coast rapper. He was born in New York and raised in Baltimore. It wasn't until later on that he moved out to Cali and joined Death Row.

2pac was not with Death Row at this time.

Also, at this time gangster rap was far more prevalent in West Coast rap. 2pac wasn't really a gangster rapper at this point he was very versatile and could rap about anything. When he joined Death Row he went all out thug.

There weren't many rappers that were well known and could make music to fit this movie. Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, none of them had debuted albums yet. Mobb Deep really didn't blow up until they released The Infamous in 1995.

There was some gangster rapper from like BDP that maybe they could've used but I think the soundtrack fit perfectly. I think overall the soundtrack fit very well.

I always found it a bit unusual how they had an east coast movie with a predominantly west coast soundtrack tho it came out pretty good for how different it was.
