No, I would NEVER want to see this show rebooted as it was, like Will & Grace, Roseanne, Murphy Brown, Mad About You, or anything else that's coming up.
But what I wouldn't mind seeing - stay with me here - grow them up a bit. There's nothing wrong with the "circle of friends" formula even in middle age. It would be a whole different dynamic. No purple apartment, no Foosball table, no Central Perk. Just the friends we love, living as middle aged people do, who have aged/grown just as we have, with teens and adult children.
Hell I think this is even the only '90s sitcom in which no one - parents incuded - is dead.
I wouldn't mind seeing a movie version of that, but I think it would alienate a lot of the shows fans... It might be 'too real' and spoil the fantasy...
If they all reunited for Thanksgiving Dinner or something, it could work. Maybe for the first half of the film, we see them all in their individual lives, acting like grownups, and having to overcome obstacles to get to wherever the dinner is being held [*]. When they get there, they could all revert to their "young" personalities. Chandler could at first be going through a midlife crisis, and not be able to tell jokes. Being with his friends again could revive his sarcasm, and he'd say "am I funny again?", and Monica would say "oh honey:) you were NEVER funny:D" Ross and Monica could get stuck in a stalemate headgrip over the last slice of turkey like during the football game, which Joey would steal. Joey could say "How you doin'" to a delivery girl, and then remark that it had been a long time since he'd said those words.
[*]Heck, Phoebe still lives in NYC - maybe she now rents the apartment for old time's sake, or maybe she paid like one week's rent so they could hold the dinner there. Or even more Phoebeish, maybe she broke in and acts like she lives there now, and the very end they'll all be chased away by an elderly Trigger!
I agree with a couple of above posters who suggested they make a movie and have them all get together for Thanksgiving or something. Ross and Rachel will have at least two more kids, Mike and Phoebe they could make it to where she had triplets again, and they could have the dinner at Chandler and Monica's house in the country. Maybe a little guest appearance by Janice. :)
It would not sell rebooted...the whole premise of this show was that their biggest challenge was what flavor coffee to drink and how cute to look for the 'next relationship'.
I don't think they could afford to reboot this series. Weren't they getting almost 1.2 million an episode each when it went off the air. That's what really killed the show. How much do you think they would they ask for now?
The salaries weren´t what killed the show. The show could have gone on another 10 years, Warner Bros. were already making alot from syndication. They all just decided to end it because they wanted to move on. Each of the six is actually getting 20 million a year from syndication. I don´t think the asking price is the issue, I think the actors would do it for free if the script was good enough.
Studio would not do this....which is why it would collapse. Who would want to see 40 somethings (which is what they would be now) working @ a coffeeshop and lounging in an apartment
Then you didn't read my original post, did you? I said grow them up. As I said: "There's nothing wrong with the "circle of friends" formula even in middle age. It would be a whole different dynamic. No purple apartment, no Foosball table, no Central Perk. Just the friends we love, living as middle aged people do, who have aged/grown just as we have, with teens and adult children."
Though "adult children" may be a bit far, kids/teen kids would be believable.
I did which is why I said the studio would mess up the concept of a 'reboot' and instead keep it the same. Look what they did to Murphy Brown. This is why it's getting pulled after one season. Star Trek: The Next Generation WAS a reboot but did not have Shatner...etc still commanding. Had new crew and new adventures. Need new generation new adventures here too.
Even better: show them on crack and welfare: Friends meets Shameless. Could Joey now be turning tricks? Is their biggest decision what to shoot in their arm? I might watch that.
I think that's a great idea. As long as it's FUNNY and brings a NEW ANGLE on their friendship (like you said, living as middle aged people do, who have aged/grown just as we have, with teens and adult children). I'm all for it!
Not only it's a good idea, it's a NEW idea too: friends with adults problems and stories, instead of all the copycats's dilemmas like "where did I put my d20" and other young adult shenanigans. It's a new formula, I cannot think of any series like that!
I don't think the thanksgiving movie idea is good. That sounds a lot like the sex and the city movie: a great way to miss on what made the series great for a 2 hours borefest.
