Which Character Do You Wish Had Stayed On The Show Longer...

My favorite character that I wish could have been a regular would have been "Bob" who played in 8 episodes of season 1... played by Malgorzata Gebel. I thought she was cute and I adored the accent.

Do you have a favorite that you'd like to share?

The one story line/characater that they could have omited was Dr. Susan Lewsis' sister... Chloe (in the early seasons). In the later seasons, I would have done something different with Abby Lockhart's mom (Sally Fields) and brother. What's yours?

I wish Lucy Knight was on the show longer. Dr. Carter was a horrible teacher/mentor back then and I always felt she could have been a great character given the chance.

Agree with Lucy Knight. Also would have preferred that Susan Lewis had never left (her coming back later didn't come close to making up for it).

reply

I always was sad we never got to see Susan and Mark together. They were building toward it when Sherry left.

reply

Yeah, they were. And they kind of hinted at it when she came back, but nothing came of that.

Stringfield was contracted to stay on the show, but she freaked out in some way and left. The writers had intended Greene and Lewis to be together, but it was not to be. By the time she came back Greene was with Elizabeth. Who knows what things would have been like if Stringfield had stayed.

reply

Stringfleld found the shooting schedule too exhausting. I think it was 12-hour days or something. So she asked out of the contract after Season 2. It was a shame because her character was getting better, and it would have been nice to see her and Mark wind up together. Instead, we saw Mark go through multiple women before finding Elizabeth.

And not only did her leaving affect the stories. ER was just about to go into syndication, and she wound up walking away from a lot of money.

And by the time she came back in Season 8, the show was in its twilight as being a top medical drama. Most of the original cast had left, and La Salle and Edwards were on their way out.

When Sherry returned to the show in Season 8, she had obviously been ingesting more pasta than Diet Coke in the interim. She also came back with one of the worst haircuts in TV history. After her first year back she was on air less and less as the series basically became “The Maura Tierney Show”. Sherri kept gaining weight each year and ironically it wasn’t until she had another baby that she got her weight under control again. During her last season she looked more like the Susan Lewis of Seasons 1-3. Then she abruptly quit again.

The Carter-Lucy student/teacher relationship was a major part of Carter's character development, and I'm not even talking about the stabbing (necessitated by Kellie Martin wanting out as she couldn't bare to be not he hospital set after her sister died). It showed that Carter was trying so badly to be like Benton as a mentor, but that his failure lead him to realize he need to be like Mark Greene and he ended up becoming a great teacher.

reply

@Reaperdude: you're spot on, thank you for pointing that out. Whether you like Carter or not, his character got better and better and was tied with the quality of the show. After he left (more or less), the show really went down hill.

reply

Unfortunately for the actress, Kellie Martin, her heart wasn't in the show prior to her starting her first season. Her sister died of Lupus in the hospital in the summer of 1998, just prior to her starting work on ER. And apparently, working in a hospital setting was too much, emotionally, for her.

Noah was great in all of the seasons up until the one where KM joined the show. He was able to balance the drama and comedy of being the perennial underdog extremely well. Once KM joined and his role switched to being a mentor he started becoming unlikable.

It would have been great if Alan Alda's character had become a regular but he was only in about 5 episodes before he got dementia and had to retire.
