"That would be great, with it not having a storyline and all. All it was back then was, Princess Kidnapped, go get her."
Yet, the Super Mario Bros. Super Show somehow managed to do it for several seasons 5 years before the movie was released. If Hollywood wanted to make a Mario Bros. movie but didn't think the games had enough material for a feature length runtime, why not just base it off of the TV show?
"You want the movie to be based entirely on stomping goombas collecting coins and breaking brick blocks?"
Obviously no, since I might as well boot up the game and play that if that's what I wanted to see. On the other hand, if the visuals of the movie (characters, locations, etc.) had born any resemblance to the games, like, at all, it wouldn't have been so bad.
It'd be like if they made a Call of Duty movie that was set in the Old West, or a Bioshock movie set in medieval Europe: fans of the game would be pissed that they were promised a movie based on their favorite game and instead got a confused mess that barely resembles anything they expected to see.
